James Munro

"Jim Munro writes poems which flow upwards, rising from the page with a music that is a pleasure to hear." (CPR International) "This is wonderful work, and deserves a wide, understanding and appreciative reading public. The poetry especially has a touch of magic mingled with the suffering and the joy... which is rare." (Mary Tordeur)

APOLLO'S WOMAN
A one-act verse-play depicting the home-coming of Agamemnon at the end of the Trojan War. He has with him the beautiful Princess Cassandra, the soothsayer whom none believe, and (although he seems blisfully unaware of it) he faces the fury of his wife, Clytemnestra, Helen's sister, whom he has not seen since he set sail for Troy ten years earlier after having sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia in order to get a fair wind ...

KING
Set in the High Place of En-dor, one of the hill-top sanctuaries of ancient Palestine, this play brings to the stage the final days in the life of the first King of Israel, Saul of Benjamin. Faced with defeat at the hands of the Philistines and treachery from his son-in-law David, and hearing that a witch may be able to conjure up the shade of the prophet Samuel (the one man who could, if still alive, give him the counsel and support he needs), Saul turns in desperation to the Holy Woman of En-dor. For although he himself has been persecuting and burning such women for years, the Old Religion still flourishes on the hills and in the woods, Holy Women are still revered, and despite Saul's efforts, ritual prostitution under a green tree is still the normal and accepted mode of worshipping the gods of the land. Saul is a king who has hitherto never known anything but triumph; now he faces the reality of imminent death.

THIRTEEN-CARD SPREAD
>A MEDIEVAL MYSTERY< MARIANA IN PARIS - Lady Marian MacElpin is now an unofficial student at the university in Paris: to be admitted to lectures, she has to pretend to be a man. But it is to her that the other students turn when one is charged with the murder of his rich uncle, a miser and reputed alchemist. She quickly discovers that the murder (and a second related murder) had their roots far away on the island of Ibiza eighteen years before, and involve not only alchemy and the tarot and (of course, with Mariana there) witchcraft (one of the witches, known as La Fille d'Or, turns out to have been for years the secret mistress of Charles VI, King of France), but also a one-armed Albanian "king" of the Paris underworld, and such well-known historical figures as Christine de Pisan (then a girl of thirteen), and Nicolas Flamel, the alchemist (later Grand Master of the outlawed Prieuré de Sion).

THE WITCH OF BALINTORE
>A MEDIEVAL MYSTERY< MARIANA IN SCOTLAND Lady Marian MacElpin (known in Spain as Doña Mariana de la Manga), now twenty-four, and still fighting the label "witch" that has haunted her since childhood, travels for the first time to the land of her ancestors. There, in the far north of Scotland, called upon by chance to act as interpreter for two Arabic-speaking slaves whose master has been murdered, she meets her Scottish grandmother (a witch, of course) whom she had long believed dead; she becomes embroiled in ancient myths and legends (sheltimen, mermaids, elps, the Queen of Elphame) - which prove no less fantastic now, in the flesh, than they had seemed in the tales her father told her when she was a child; and she falls (yet again) into the unsympathetic hands of authority, this time in the form of the local Master Executioner and his obnoxious son, and the skeletal black-robed Dominican Friar, Brother Arsenius, Inquisitor …
