2008 Jan 26  France puts secret UFO archive on Web (Associated Press, 3-2007) by John Leicester, Associated Press, March 23, 2007 Fair Use Distribution Summary: France is the first country to put its entire weird sightings archive online, said Jacques Patenet, who heads the space agency's UFO cell - the Group for Study and Information on Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena JOHN LEICESTER PARIS - The saucer-shaped object is said to have touched down in the south of France and then zoomed off. It left behind scorch marks and that haunting age old question: Are we alone? This is just one of the cases from France's secret "X-Files" - some 100,000 documents on supposed UFOs and sightings of other unexplained phenomena that the French space agency is publishing on the Internet. France is the first country to put its entire weird sightings archive online, said Jacques Patenet, who heads the space agency's UFO cell - the Group for Study and Information on Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena. Their oldest recorded sighting dates from 1937, Patenet told The Associated Press in an interview Friday. The first batch of archives went up on the agency's Web site this week, drawing a server-busting wave of traffic. "The Web site exploded in two hours. We suspected that there was a certain amount of interest, but not to this extent," Patenet said. The archive includes police and expert reports, witness sketches (some are childlike doodlings), maps, photos and video and audio recordings. In all, the archive has some 1,650 cases on record and about 6,000 witness accounts. The space agency, known by its French initials CNES, said it is making them public to draw the scientific community's attention to unexplained cases and because their secrecy generated suspicions that officials were hiding something. "There's always this impression of plots, of secrets, of wanting to hide things," Patenet said. "The great danger would be to leave the field open to sects and charlatans." He said many cases were unexplained lights in the sky. "Only 20 to 30" could be classified as "Objet Volant Non Identifie" - UFOs that appeared to be physical objects, leaving "marks on the ground, radar images," he said. Even Charles de Gaulle, France's wartime hero who became president, got the UFO bug. "In 1954, there was a wave of sightings of phenomena in France, and it went up to the highest levels of state. Gen. de Gaulle himself assigned ... an aide and told him, 'Look into this for me, study it to see if something needs to be done,'" Patenet said. That year, there were hundreds of sightings over several months, but generally there are 50 to 100 reported each year. Only 9 percent of France's strange phenomena have been fully explained, the agency said. Experts found likely reasons for another 33 percent, and 30 percent could not be identified for lack of information. Other cases were impossible to crack. The most baffling were labeled "Class D aerospace phenomena" - which the agency defines as "inexplicable despite precise testimonies and the (good) quality of material information gathered." Some 28 percent of sightings fall into this category. Patenet singled out the January 1981 case of the saucer-shaped object that a witness said he saw land in Trans-en-Provence, a village inland from the French Riviera. Some 8 feet across, the zinc-colored object made a whistling noise as it landed. The witness later drew a picture: It resembled a wok with a lid and legs. "The machine stayed a few seconds on the ground and then left very quickly but it left marks that were analyzed and allowed us to determine that the ground had been heated up, that the object must have weighed several hundred kilos (pounds), and that surrounding plants underwent biological changes," said Patenet. "So something really happened. It really defies analysis," he said. The agency said everything in the archive would be published, except for psychological reports about witnesses and their names. Most of the time, witnesses were sincere about what they saw, Patenet said. "Very few look for publicity because they fear most of all that they will not be taken seriously." Still, there were frauds. In 1979, in Cergy-Pontoise outside Paris, a man showed up at a police station claiming his friend had been abducted by a UFO.. as a bright light appeared on the road and swallowed up his car! Several days later, the man purportedly reappeared in a field, emerging out of a sphere of light. Investigators went so far as to test the man's blood for signs that he had recently experienced weightlessness - and they found none. The agency labelled it a hoax. Some cases took years to unravel. In 1985, two farmers near the Atlantic coastal city of Royan saw a burning object drop into a field nearby. Experts initially concluded that it was part of the propulsion device of a recently launched satellite. Eventually they realized it was a piece of German World War II ordnance that spontaneously exploded four decades after the war. Among the unexplained cases, one of the most perplexing concerned a 1994 Air France flight. While flying over the Paris region, the crew noticed a large brown-red disk hovering on the horizon and constantly changing shape. The case "has never been explained to this day, and leaves the door open to all possible hypotheses," the agency wrote. So, do we have neighbors out there, after all? "I don't have an answer to that," said Patenet. "Even if there is such a planet, given the size of the universe, what is the probability that two civilizations ... will meet or come across each other? I really don't know. It's very complicated. It's incalculable." 2008 Jan 25  Scientists create gene map for synthetic life By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor Reuters - Thursday, January 24 08:18 pm WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Researchers have assembled the entire genome of a living organism, a bacterium in what they hope is an important step to creating artificial life. The bug, Mycoplasma genitalium, has the smallest known genome of any truly living organism, with 485 working genes. Viruses are smaller, but they are not considered completely alive as they cannot replicate by themselves. Bacteria can and do, and the team at the non-profit J. Craig Venter Institute in Maryland has been working for years to try to build M. genitalium from scratch. "We consider this the second in significant steps of a three-step process in our attempts to make the first synthetic organism," Craig Venter, founder of the institute, told a telephone briefing. "This entire process started with four bottles of chemicals." M. genitalium has a fairly simple structure, all its DNA is carried on a single chromosome. Chromosomes are the structures that carry genetic material, and the entire code is called the genome. Other genetic material called RNA is needed to convert this gene map into something a cell can use to function. Writing in the journal Science, the researchers said they used first E. coli bacteria and then yeast cells to copy pieces of DNA and assemble them into an artificial chromosome. Next, the researchers say, they want to insert this artificial chromosome into a cell and see if they can make their synthetic chromosome "boot up" the cell. They started by chemically making DNA fragments in the lab. Their first step was to make the four building blocks of DNA — adenine, guanine, cytosine and thiamine or the A, G, C and T that make up the genetic code. For M. genitalium, which can cause a sexually transmitted infection in men and women, these four letters repeat in pairs 580,000 times. It is not possible to build one long strand of DNA because it is too brittle, so the sequence was broken down into pieces called cassettes. Some work was outsourced to a lab that specializes in making circular DNA fragments called plasmids. SYNTHETIC MICROORGANISMS Venter said the chromosome had been disabled so that it could not live outside the lab and so that it could not take over some other organism by mistake. The plan also underwent ethical review by a panel at the University of Pennsylvania. Venter's hope is to eventually make synthetic microorganisms that could be used for producing biofuels, cleaning up toxic waste or pulling excess carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. In June 2007, the team announced that they had managed to change one species of bacteria called Mycoplasma capricolum into another, Mycoplasma mycoides, by replacing the genome of one with the genome of another. Venter said he would like to use a synthetic chromosome in a similar way, to trick one organism into acting like another. Another key question — what is the minimum number of genes needed for life? Venter hopes to be able to make a streamlined, stripped-down organism from scratch. These days green is big. The environmental movement has been around for decades, but issues such as global warming, recycling, and saving the planet have never been so much in the spotlight. Though many corporations have arrived late in the game (cynics might suspect they saw another type of green in "green marketing"), many New Agers and believers in the mysterious and paranormal have long incorporated environmentalism into their beliefs.
Among people who claim to have been abducted or contacted by space aliens, messages about world peace and warnings of impending environmental disaster are common. One popular belief is that UFO sightings are simply glimpses of the benevolent aliens watching over us, monitoring our destructive ways. We should work to save the planet, the thinking goes, but if we can't, our savior space brothers will intervene just before the world destroys itself, either through environmental pollution or global nuclear war. Once that happens, we Earthlings will see the error of our ways, ushering in a new era of peace, love, and global consciousness.
Unknown creatures
This environmental concern, is echoed in the ‘cryptozoology’ community as well. For many people who believe in mysterious creatures such as Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster, the search for these animals is urgent. We must find them to save their habitats from impending ecological doom. There is even a longstanding and lively debate among Bigfoot researchers as to whether or not Bigfoot should be killed if the chance ever presents itself. Some claim that since the only thing that will finally prove the creatures' existence is a body, killing one is justified. Once the animal is proven to exist, measures can be taken to protect them. Others worry that the relative rarity of sightings suggests that the existing population (estimated in the tens or hundreds of thousands) can't afford to lose even one Bigfoot.
Regardless of how many Bigfoot can dance on the head of a pin, the issue will remain safely on the back burner until at least one Bigfoot, live or dead, is finally found. Many Bigfoot buffs would prefer that one is never discovered. As one contributor to Cryptomundo.com, a Web site about such creatures, wrote:
"You almost feel you're jeopardizing these creatures if you reveal their locations. One thing we should have learned by now is that man destroys everything he touches."
This bleak notion that humans inherently (and inevitably) destroy everything is common in New Age circles. However, though humans can destroy, we can also build and protect. The revival of animals from the brink of extinction (such as bald eagles in North America and elephants in Africa) are but two of many examples. Mankind may or may not be marching blithely on the path to ecological self destruction, but if Bigfoot or aliens help encourage people to reduce, reuse, and recycle, so much the better. "The (Zimbabwe) government was aware of the plans and the president made reference to the British's sinister motives on several occasions," he said. "A defence plan had been operationalised and, in fact, it is still in operation." "We were also aware that short of a full-fledged invasion, the British were and are still contemplating the elimination of our political leadership through a number of assassinations," Charamba added. Charamba was not available for further comment on Sunday. In the article entitled "Zim prepared for British invasion," the Sunday Mail quoted Charamba as saying that Blair was forced to shelve the invasion plan on the advice of former members of the British Military Advisory Training Team who worked in Zimbabwe in the 1980s and 1990s and said Mugabe had "a very capable army". Charamba also suggested that Blair abandoned the plan after failing to win unequivocal support from the United States, although Britain feels a historical obligation to protect the interests of Zimbabwean whites, who are mostly of British origin. "The invasion of Zimbabwe without concrete U.S. support was unthinkable for Britain," he said. London has repeatedly rejected accusations that it is interfering in Zimbabwean politics and wants to overthrow the 83-year-old Mugabe over his seizure and redistribution of white-owned farms to blacks. But Britain and other Western powers say Mugabe is guilty of gross human rights abuses and of running down one of Africa's most promising economies.
