Catherine’s own larger-than-life detective, Jonny C Speed and his team of characters may have met their match when African mercenaries show up in this small South Mississippi town and make repeated attacks on Jonny. Why him? Jonny C’s got a clue, but he needs a prayer to get out of this tangle of lies, murders, drugs, and crooked lawyers. Chai Song
Many of the Chai Song poems were first written over twenty years ago. They have been revised again and again, on paper, in dreams, and on computer. Many of their fellows have been honed into nothing by now. These few remain.

The Curve at Puu O Hewa
We met Sam Choy at his great restaurant on the Big Island. When he heard that we were headed for Kauai his face lit up like a kid's. "You'll love Kauai! It's our most beautiful Island. On Kauai you just point your camera and click, click, click. All good down there!" Coming north out of Poipu we burst out of a rain shower and I took Sam's advice. I grabbed the camera and snapped a shot right through the wet windshield. Sam was right– all good down there!

Boats at Bar Harbor
While waiting for our whale watch to launch into the Gulf of Maine, Lin and I drifted over to join a crowd admiring the most spectacular of the many yachts moored along the pier. Circled by a wide and polished rosewood gunwale, she was new, big, and flashy. I stepped back to take a picture of this princess and stumbled. I steadied myself on a piling and looked down to find this tiny moorage full of the real boats of Bar Harbor.

Glass Canyon, Vancouver
Vancouver manages to be both a genteel old city and a galloping new metropolis. As the forest of skyscrapers spreads from the Granville Mall into the West End, these glass shafts find elegance not in their own cutting edge forms, but in the history they reflect.

Seattle Tug and barge
The ferry trip from Bainbridge Island to the Seattle waterfront is one of the the great commutes in the world. This was a brisk day on the Sound; the island's fog bank was stripped away by a stiff wind on the crossing, and looming clouds gave us just enough relief to show us the city as we approached.

Heading for Home
Alabama's Dauphin Island is a magical place—essential resting spot for migrating birds, holy site for many Native-Americans, launching point for the most varied salt-water angling on the continent, and sandy playground for thousands. But as condos and beach houses crowd the island, the sun is setting on three hundred years of tradition. Now, each afternoon brings a cluttered jam of day-sailors and sports fishermen scrambling for harbor and happy hour. The sunset is left for a lone waterman.
