American Beat creates and presents documentaries that reveal who people are, what people do, why they do it, and how they cope with a world in which history is moving beneath our very feet. Documentaries stand, at the very least, as a record of what was here at one point, of what the world was made of, and of where people hoped or feared it was going. American Beat's films represent a small part of the changing American landscape.

The End of New Music.
"Hardly a week goes by without some new declaration of classical music's declining relevance in contemporary society. Mr. Taylor's film... might seem to be the latest verse of an extended eulogy." -Steve Smith, New York Times. This verite documentary follows three young composers (Judd Greenstein, David T Little, and Missy Mazzoli) and two music ensembles (NEWSPEAK and NOW Ensemble) as they set out to redefine what "new music" can be. The film's intimate and kinetic style captures the unique moment in these artists' lives when they are figuring out not only what they want their music to be, but also how and where they want to present it. By taking their performances out of traditional concert halls and into the clubs and bars of New York, they are making a bold bid to find new audiences and success on their own terms. In many ways, this documentary is the familiar story of the American band trying to 'make it', but it takes place against a musical backdrop unlike anything you've ever heard before.
