Ally Hauptmann-Gurski's samizdat novel LA PLEVITSKAYA tells the story of this Gypsy singer in full for the first time. As long as Stalin was alive, the Plevitskaya story was taboo, and then she became forgotten.
The historical samizdat novel is geared to the young (14+) and the oldish, who are interested in music, Gypsies, the Russian Revolution or simply just want to learn how their migrant ancestors lived in Russia.
Like the great opera singer Fyodor Chalyapin, Gypsy singer Plevitskaya was accredited Soloist to His Imperial Majesty Tsar Nicolas II.
Plevitskaya's life is retold from a backstage view and takes us into the era between 1899 and 1938.
In the picture, Ally Hauptmann-Gurski shows off her Plevitskaya tambourine, which she bought on one of the many tours she did with Russian musicians.

Duelling Dombras
DUELLING DOMBRAS features the Prima and Alto Dombras, which are Russian instruments with three strings. The Dombra is said to be from the Mongolian steppes but the melody here is from the other end of the former Russian Empire, Moldova.
With breakneck speed the dombras vy for first position in this exciting recording. This recording is by Dieter Hauptmann whose new group HOT ZAKUSKI issued a CD 'Romantic Russia' (available through their website bigpond/artifex2/zakuski).
The Russophile will recognise, that the Zhivago sound is a lot more Dombra than her more famous cousin, the triangular Balalaika.
