Print: $60.28 Download: FREE This is the story of seven young individuals living their student gap year backpacking, as is the fashion of much of the youth today. Morocco makes the perfect backdrop for this common “route de passage” experience that today's youth seem compelled to take.
It is a mirage of experiences that takes them from the western suburban world they live in, to the culture shock poverty that lines the streets of morocco. Yet unhindered by today's “entrapping” technology and fast pace rat race life style, they soon discover that there is much more to life worth appreciating. The adventure develops as they unravel the hidden mysteries of morocco and take delight from the simpler things in life, usually taken for granted. Throughout the photographic journey, the friends experience a dizzying blur as they come to terms with what truly matters in life.

2007 Dec 10 During the course I have had many mixed views about this assignment. The end is now in sight. I look back and the journey we have all taken and I am pleased to say that I have learnt a lot from this project. During the preliminary weeks I did not fully understand the definition of a photobook. Now, not only have I designed my own photobook. I have done so using In Design, software I had never used. The lulu website was also a new experience for me. It is still at times confusing to navigate. But by publishing as a group I found that I can rely on help and support from my fellow peer’s. Especially when posting issues, problems or questions on the group forum. This assignment as also taught me how easy it is to publish your own work and has given me new ideas on how to display my work in future projects. I am now currently waiting for my book to arrive and excited to see the final product. Hopefully everything will run smoothly. But I understand that some of my fellow peers have encountered problems with their final lulu printed version. This gives me more reason to explore alternative self-publishing websites for future projects.

Here are my posted problems and response to someones problem.
My first problem which I encountered when trying to upload my final PDF onto the Lulu website was that my file size was to big 549MB. With the help of Paula we shrunk the size using a program on the Adobe CS3. Alternatively you can download free software from the Internet called Irfan, which can do the same thing.
My second problem was also as a result of trying to upload my PDF file into the Lulu website. For some reason it was taking a long time to upload. So I resolved the problem using Cyberduck.

2007 Dec 03 The Facebook by Georgi Manolov is a collection of Black and white portrait photography. The book explores the idea of portraits in relation to aesthetic, culture, identity, ideology and psychology. The book is of A4 size and the design follows the concept of black and white. All of the photographs are very dramatic and visually striking. They demonstrate a good contrast, good lighting techniques that produce interesting shadows and a good use of angle composition. The photographic images are of excellent quality and show attention to detail. I highly recommend you buying this book if interested in black and white portrait photography.

2007 Dec 03 Finally I have customized my storefront. Apart from being a fun experience, I also understand that it is very important to have a visually inviting storefront. Especially if you are interested in selling any of your work. I did come across a small problem when applying the header design. Whereby I was unable to save my setting after uploading an image and applying text. If you have experienced anything similar or know how to solve the problem, please let me know. 2007 Nov 28 1-description of theme Our photo-mag is a collaboration of six photographers exhibiting their photographic works in the general theme of portraiture photography. Each photographer will produce there own style of photography within the theme. 2-frequency The frequency at which we will produce the magazine is annually. We feel the magazine is a side project and a chance to work and get together with our fellow photographers. 3-description of photography: This magazine is collaboration between six photographers. The magazine is divided into six parts, were each photographer edits there own space within the magazine. The initial idea is a chance for the photographer to publish and distribute their own photographic work. Therefore the submissions are of the photographer themselves. 4-description of text: At the beginning of each photographer’s section, there will be a bibliography of the photographer. Followed by the photographer’s accounts and description of his work within the magazine space. 5-description of team roles: Each photographer is the editor of their own section within the magazine. They have complete control of that space, but it must be under the general theme (portraits). When designing the front cover the six photographers join together and make editorial decision as a team. 6-design: The size of the magazine will be A4. Each photographer will have 5pages of space. Roughly the total number of pages of the magazine will be 30. 7-relationship between online and print version: This section of the magazine is till under discussion. But there will be a difference between the online and printed version. 8: pod At this moment the pod we will be using is Lulu. But we are also looking at alternative ones such as My Publisher and Shutterfly. This is an example of the Magazine front cover. ![Image]() ![Image]()
2007 Nov 18 My first bookmark is APOGEE PHOTO MAGAZINE:Self-Publishing. Apogee Photo is an internet photography magazine, whilst browsing through it I found an article that writes about self-publishing. Although it mainly talks about photobooks, he comments on the editing of photographic material and also gives good tips for thinking of ideas which can be applied to the Photo magazine project 2. Also it comments on other self-publishing sites which are an alternative to Lulu. These are My Publisher and Shutterfly. My second bookmark is File Magazine. This website follows the same structure as LIP magazine and JPG magazine. These magazines where highlighted to us by Louise Forrester (last week guest speaker). File Magazine demonstrates collective photopublishing projects where there is a social situation underlying the collecting and editing of the photographic material. It is a good source with great photography. My Third Book bookmark is SHOWstudio. This was one of the websites of the projects which was discussed and commented on during last week lesson by Louise. SHOWstudio is an online fashion broadcasting company committed to showing the process of creativity. This is a link to my del.icio.us site where you can get direct links to my bookmarks. my del.icio.us
2007 Oct 07 From the selection of books presented to us at the Perry library, I decided to comment on a book called “Migrations” by Sebastiao Salgado. This photobook is a collection images that demonstrate the daily struggles of immigrants around the world, by showing emotion and the environment in which these people are living in. The book as an object is very big and heavy, because of these factors it stands out from the rest. There is no predominant layout of the way the photographs are presented. There is one photograph to a page as well as one photograph as a two page spread and two and more photos to each page. All photographs are in Black and white and there is no text apart from the introduction at the beginning of the book. The book contains images that are independent from each other but are all related because of the subject. They have been taken over a period of seven year and in more than thirty-five countries, because of this the book can be seen as a career review of his photojournalist work. But none the less is still a photobook in the sense that it is a collection of photographs that tell a story. If you are interested in the book you can check it out at the Perry library ISBN 30102008676460 Or you can buy the book on the internet at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Migrations-Sebastiao-Salgado/dp/0893818917As you all know I am new to the class therefore I am unable to use work from the first year projects. So my idea so far for the photobook would be a collection of images of people I encountered through by travels in Morocco. They will be portraits which also demonstrate the environment and culture. I have still not decided the layout or book design but will decide with further research and the lessons with Paula.
2007 Sep 27 Hi I am Alastair Sanchez. I am 22 and come from Gibraltar a British Colony on the Southern tip of Spain. In 2006 I completed a HND Course in Photography from the University of Northampton. The past year I have been working in a bar in Gibraltar, saving money for my travels. I travelled for one and a half months, all throughout India. It was one of the greatest experiences I have had and also it was great for photography.
One of my favourite photographers is Steve McCurry; he is a travel photographer and mostly focuses on images to do with people, their environment and their culture. He publishes most of his work on National Geographic but you can view his work on www.stevemccurry.com
Learning online is a new experience but looking forward to getting some work published and maybe even making some money!
Well that’s all. See you in class and looking forward to getting to know you all better.
