You did it. You just wrote the great American novel. That was the hard part. Now all you have to do is convince people to read your book. Don’t make marketing your book any harder than it needs to be. There are lots of ways to complicate the process, but when it comes down to it, it’s all about reaching your audience and convincing them to buy your book. Easy, right?
Reach your audience:
- Create a weRead account: C’mon now, I shouldn’t have to mention this again! weRead is the tool for reaching people who already love to read books! And whats better than seeing your book compared with the greats like Twain and Kesey? Chocolate pie, you say? Surely you jest! Read this post for more information on weRead.
- Create a Twitter account: Twitter is a global community and enables complete strangers with common interests to connect with one another. You are sure to get more followers if you share relevant information about your genre, industry or if you just have a unique perspective on things. For proper Twitter etiquette, be sure to follow those that are following you because it allows discussions and Direct Messages to take place creating a truly unique global networking opportunity. A word to the wise: to keep followers happy be sure not to post more than 3 tweets in a row, people will get turned off and stop following you. Read more about Twitter on the Lulu blog.
- Come on over to Facebook: Whether you know it or not, you probably already have a few friends on Facebook. Facebook is a great way to expand your network and potential market. Proper Facebook etiquette dictates only one to two status updates a day. Anymore than that and people will block your updates on their homepage and in turn you will lose your audience. Use the search tools to find people with similar interests.
- Press Release: Make your press release stand out. If you plan on targeting local media, mention that you are a local writer. Give a little background info about yourself. You just have to convince the rest of the world what your mother knew about you all along, you are special! Now go get ‘em!
Convince your audience to buy your book:
- Price: I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a reasonably priced book. If you are in the US, consider the Publisher Grade paper option for text-based books. Don’t set a high royalty for yourself; if people won’t buy your book you’re not going to get any sales. Be aware of the final price and how it compares with traditionally published books of similar formats and genres. Remember that most books are priced as whole dollars or end in $0 .95 and $0. 99. I highly suggest offering your title an ebook download, too. A good price for an ebook is $5.
- Free preview download: A great way to get people excited about your book is to offer a portion of your book as a free download. This will get people hooked and they will want to continue reading.
- Description: Make sure your description does not give away the entire story, but is interesting enough to lure the reader in. Also, please be sure there are no typos in the description! This will turn people off immediately.
- Website: Take advantage of your Lulu storefront. It’s free and customizable. These days it’s easier than ever to create a website. Go on over to Weebly.com and use their easy drag-and-drop interface and create your very own web presence. You can even buy your own domain name through Weebly and add your own forums! How cool is that?!
- Book trailer: Book trailers are a relatively new phenomenon and I highly recommend you create one for each book you write. A really great book trailer will excite your potential readers and they’ll want to share it with their friends as well! Read more about book trailers in one of my older posts.
- Distribution: Get your book listed in more places with and ISBN. The more people who see your book = the more people who will buy your book!
