Lulu Lens: What Trim Size Do You Want To See?

lululens_v2

Last week we decided to try something new, and actively talk to our users about what we’re discussing internally. To get your feedback I posted to the forums and asked, “What would you like to see more of  in the Lulu Community?” We’ve received some great responses so far, and I encourage everyone to continue participating. This gave us the great idea of having a weekly post called the Lulu Lens which asks you for your opinion on a specific topic. Of course, we won’t be able to do everything, but we will be listening to you more and taking your feedback into account.

Each week, we will be posting a new topic, and looking for your feedback so we can gather data and make decisions based on what you have to say.

This week, we want to know: What trim size not currently available on the site would you like to see us offer?

  1. I’d like to see 5.5×8.5 with cream colored paper. The size is great and the paper is superior (though it isn’t rough enough for me, but that’s all I’ve got). That’d be a great addition to the family.

    Also 5.25×8 would be great.

  2. While Lulu already has a 5.5×8.5 size(I love that size) I think a 5.25×8 trimsize would be good also as it’s just a slight enough difference between the digest size to make a difference. Also an 8×10 size. The current US Letter size makes a book feel too bulky.

  3. 14 x 20,5 cm.

  4. I agree with Dawson

5.25×8 is a great size not available on lulu.

  5. I would like to see a 9×12 or bigger. Coloring books are better at this size for smaller children.

.25 sizes would be a great addition in loo of perforated book types(if applicable)

    8.5×11 Landscape

This is more about orientation than size. Having the option to set up a graphic book in this way allows for the possibility to have a landscape file that one can also print at home. The 7×9 option is too small and too limiting as the only landscape option.

  7. Al Rayl

I would like to see the soft bound Photo books offered in a horizontal (landscape) 11×8.5. There are a lot of things like Creative Memories that have beautiful pages but they do not offer the soft bound books in this size.

The quality of Lulu’s photo books is awesome and I think this could be a huge seller.

I am ready to publish and print my full color childrens illustrated book and need to speak with someone by telephone or in person. (New York or Texas)

    I have several questions.

    Thank you.

11 by 17 Tabloid and 17 by 22 Broadsheet are great for Posters amd Flyers. I have two 11 by 17 posters that I have made and would like to offer on LuLu. I like to include text on the back of the poster for explanation, credits, etc.

  10. Also (this is slightly off topic) WE WANT MATTE COVERS. Almost all of Lulu can scream this in unison.

    Matte 5.25×8 would be AWESOME.

  11. I could not get my last book to upload to
lulu. I couldn’t figure out what the problem
is. I need help! Is there help for me?

PS Thanks for the opportunity to get my books out there. I love you guys!/cc

I feel that your company offers a very wide selection of options already. My question is: Why are only a few available under distribution requirements? I prefer the digest size but see that it is not included in that list, is 6X9 the next nearest size?

Mr Popio, do you respond directly to these queries posted on the blog? Or is there a better avenue within Lulu for this type of question? Thank you for your time.

    I’d love to see 5.5″ x 8.5″ on Standard paper (in addition to Publisher grade paper)and 5.06″ x 7.81″.

  14. I would also like to see my book upload. So far I was able to upload two files and am still trying to upload my third file. When I uploaded my first file, it took almost a month. Now I have to revise my book and it looks like it will take another month to upload.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

I hope I’m not overstepping my bounds; I’m not a lulu.com user (yet). I found the site yesterday while looking into self-publishing options, and I do have a thought or two to toss in.

One, I’d love to see 8.5″x11″ casewrap hardbound. (I know 8.25″x10.75″ is available, and it’s close enough for what I’m looking at doing, but it’d be that much easier to have full letter-size pages.)

The other suggestion would be a card-sized (as in playing card, or even both playing-card and tarot-card) trim size on a card weight paper without a binding — literally a deck of cards. I can think of a handful of projects people might publish in that size, based on what I’ve already seen on the market from other publishers:

    1. Brainstorming, writers’ prompts, and other similar creativity tools often come in card deck form. (An amazon search for inspiration cards shows plenty of examples).

    2. Artistic tarot decks. (There are decks too numerous to count already in publication, and many more artists who’ve worked on them but never published.)

    3. Homemade games. I know a few folks who, in the aftermath of the craze over “Magic” and other collectible card games, made their own home-made card games.

    4. Recipe cards. Granted, Lulu already offers a way to publish cookbooks, but I’ve seen recipe collections published on cards instead, for easy reference.

    5. I’ve seen a handful of other miscellaneous uses too. I once saw a field manual to help technicians troubleshoot printed up as step by step procedures on cards for easy reference. A friend once went to a corporate training session where they used a stack of cards to randomly deal out roles and tasks for group work.

I can’t speak to, and couldn’t even guess, the number of people who would use it, but it might be worth a look.

  16. I have used the pocket size for one of my books, but it is a little too small for a decent margin – 5 x 8 or 5 by 7 3/4 is much more managable. I am currently trying to find another self-publishing site that uses that size for my next book, although I would prefer to stay with LuLu if the size was available.

  17. Will

A large landscape format like 11″ x 8.5″ would be great.
    Or maybe a large square, 12″ x 12″

Photographers need more options for printing photo books through Lulu

  18. I’m amazed how a lot of people want what I want to see in your site. its 5.5×8.5 paper! :) more power to lulu.com.

  19. I would like to see A4 in hardback. Reason? I am currently transferring all our history society’s A4 special publications to Lulu. We would like to offer some of them in hardback as well as softback. I have converted one to ‘large hardback’ but it needed a lot of tedious re-formatting.

  20. Nick Popio

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone! Keep it coming, and we will definitely be taking your requests into consideration!

    Paul Feldman,
If you would like, you can email me your questions at npopio@lulu.com and I will try to get you some answers.

    Connie,
Did you receive an error message? Have you had any luck since?

    Will Gibson,
Are you referring to the Pocket Size? If so, that is available for distribution, but only under the Published By Lulu option at this time. Otherwise 6×9 is the closest, yes.

    Vivienne Diane Neal,
That is definitely not normal. Are you uploading a particularly large file?

    Jeffrey,
The card-sized option is an interesting one and definitely something we will keep in mind.

    Thanks!
    Nick

  21. Will Gibson

    No, I mean DIGEST size.

  22. Nick Popio

    Will,
I apologize for the mistake, that was an oversight on my part. Unfortunately, we don’t offer Digest size at this time for distribution because of limitations with our print partner. I will however make sure that our vendor management specialists know that there is a demand for Digest size being made available for distribution. In the meantime, 6×9 is the closest we can get to 5.5×8.5 with our current distribution options. I apologize for the inconvenience.

  23. Dawson Vosburg

    Nick,

I think 8×5.25 would be a great addition! Please…it’s something I’ve been wanting for quite a while now…Createspace offers it, but with a limited page number. You could beat them and have more available pages.

    Dawson

  24. Jerry

Would like to see 7×10 and 5×8 sizes. Also a large landscape size, such as 11×8.5.

  25. Doyne Cantrell

I would like to see the Pocket size in Hard Cover Case Wrap.

That really fits with a series I wnt to do.

    Thanks,
    Doyne

  26. i’m just wondering if lulu has a world wide distribution as lulu stated my books should be on barnes and noble but they are not and what makes me more furious my books are on one of the biggest websites in the world http://www.whsmith.co.uk. and customers have made orders yep they all used there credit cards and it states on the website 3to4 weeks. whsmith are having problems getting the books because they state that they have to log on to lulu become a member just to buy our books. now the watchdog complaints are watching lulu.com with great caution as thousands of people all over the world are complaining about lulu.com stating it is hard for anyone to buy books from amazon and all other website retailers as lulu states that they do not have a distribution for these website companies. now then i smell a rat who is in control of the lulu website and why cant people buy books from amazon and whsmith and barnes and noble? and lulu once again states that they do not supply or distribute they also state that if a book on amazon or any other leading online book store has a book and it was published by lulu and with the isbn then those retailers have to become members of lulu.com to which i find is irresponsible of lulu. please let me know your thoughts about this because this is a serious matter our books are not selling on other websites because of lulu and there stubberness in other words buy from lulu.com or not at all thank you for your time.

  27. Nick Popio

    Tony,
I’m sorry you’ve had such a negative experience. Have you contacted support about your issues? If so, what is your case number?

    Thanks,
    Nick

it would be great if lulu could do larger landscape layouts with full bleed such as legal and tabloid in landscape format. Architecture schools would use this format alot for documenting end-of-term studio work folios and also student portfolios. I also work with professors who would use lulu more if they could publish their work in larger landscape folios. Urban planning feasiblity studies would be possible in the tabloid landscape layout too.

  29. One thing I’d really like to see is a hardback book in a popular paperback (or ‘pocket’)size, perhaps, 4.75x 7.5 or the like. This would be good for poetry books, novels and a variety of other things. I’d use it immediately.

  30. Frazer Lee

i’d love to see Pocket Book size available for UK ‘Published by You’ – any plans for this?

  31. Dan

4 x 5 stapled. The current Pocket size is still too large to really fit easily in a pocket. I work with small handbooks, rule books, guidebooks, and reference books designed to be literally carried around in your pocket while traveling or involved in activities.

  32. Jake

I would love to echo the desire for a large format landscape size (8.5×11 or 8×10.5 if this slightly smaller size would also allow full bleed).
I work as an architect and laying out building assessments, RFP’s, etc in a landscape format is often much more efficient when conveying information than portrait, but the existing 9×7 landscape format is just too small. Something larger would be great!!!!
