Lulu Studio Updates & Outtakes

Recently I had the great pleasure of filming Annie as she highlighted the new changes to our Photo Books and Calendars in a video I created for the Lulu Studio. The new features are pretty amazing. We’ve added a lot of new themes, allowing you to create a project that is as unique as you are. You can customize the date fields in your calendar buy actually adding a photo to any date! Importing photos is a breeze, allowing you to pull pictures from your favorite sites. I could go on and on, but I’ll let Annie tell you about it.

I’ve worked with Annie in the past on other videos, so I knew exactly what to expect. She is always very professional, detailed and has an amazing memory. There is also this incredibly silly side to Annie that makes working with her so much fun.  Luckily for you, I caught some of this on camera! Check out the outtake video and listen to Annie’s fool proof plan to getting ALL the Christmas presents this year. She also reveals the secrets to successful fundraising. You don’t want to miss this!

DRM Debate Misses Important Point — the Goal is Author Success

The Internet is the greatest tool ever created for distributing content for free. But most authors cannot afford to take months or years to write great works without the hope of getting paid.

I started Lulu to empower authors, to give them control and help them make money from their works. Authors need to earn a living so that they’re able to keep creating and adding to our collective knowledge. Everything we do at Lulu is intended to help authors find more success — even offering DRM tools. But here’s an example of a critic’s response to that particular decision:

Lulu was the promise of something better. You have failed us all by endorsing DRM and I feel you have betrayed the Open Source community who helped bring support to Lulu early on. DRM on Lulu is an embarrassment and you should be ashamed of taking Lulu down this path. This blog says DRM is the choice for authors, but it is your endorsement for depriving the world of access to knowledge.

More complete arguments against Lulu’s decision to offer DRM tools can be found here and here. Many of these critics feel very strongly about this issue. As it turns out I feel very strongly about this issue too. Not surprisingly, though, my position is the exact opposite of theirs. I have crafted my views over a career of creating customer-focused businesses, so the least I can do is provide a complete and full response.

Spread the Word, Win a Samsung SL30.

In case you haven’t heard, Lulu recently improved our creation tools for photobooks and calendars. You can now choose from 46 different themes, add photos to special dates, import Facebook photos, and more. To celebrate these new features we’re running a contest where you can win a Samsung SL30 camera.

Entering is easy. If you already have a Twitter account all you have to do is Tweet this:

It’s easier than ever to publish @Luludotcom! Win a Samsung SL30 and free books! Be creative! http://bit.ly/4y0Z1y“.

Follow @Luludotcom, and on December 9th a winner will be randomly selected from everyone who has sent out the Tweet. If you don’t have a Twitter account yet, you can sign up here.

You can also win free copies of your books. Publish your very own studio project and be as creative as you want, then tweet “@Luludotcom Take a look at my creation!” with a link to your new creation. Each Friday we will select one creative entry to win free copies.

For more information about the contest terms, please visit the contest page.

Digital Rights Management 101

As many of you are aware, Lulu recently started offering Digital Rights Management (DRM) for eBooks. We did this because many of our users requested it and because we want to offer our authors the tools they need. Whether you choose to use those tools is completely up to you. That said, DRM is a complicated subject, so I wanted to try to lay out some of the reasons you might choose to use DRM and why you might not. This will enable you to make an informed decision about what option is best for you and whether you want to invest in the tool.

What is DRM?

To begin with, I wanted to give a quick overview of Digital Rights Management. Googling the term pulls up a plethora of information and I highly suggest you poke around and research the topic further. In its simplest form, DRM is a technology tool that restricts access to digital content. It is typically used by the content provider to prevent unauthorized access to their work.

There is some controversy surrounding the use of DRM because of its use by some companies to restrict the use of content beyond what is covered by existing laws and can be (in some cases) used for anti-competitive purposes. Lulu does not in any way support these practices. Rather, we believe that DRM can be useful for authors who want to control the use of their content. We also believe that authors should be able to make the decision whether or not to use DRM for themselves.

Why You Might Want DRM

As previously mentioned, DRM can be beneficial to an author trying to protect their work from unauthorized distribution. Using DRM, you can control how many times an eBook can be downloaded for a single purchase, and the number of devices (computers, eBook readers, etc.) to which the eBook can be transferred.

If you’re an author who is trying to generate revenue off of eBook sales and you want added protection against your customers freely sharing your content, then you may want to consider investing in DRM.

Why You Might Not Want DRM

In an essay about the digital distribution of books, publisher Tim O’Reilly said, “Obscurity is a far greater threat to authors and creative artists than piracy.” If you are more concerned with people reading your material, and you want to encourage people to share your work, then you may not want to use DRM.

There is no one answer for everyone and I encourage everyone to research the topic. Think about your work and what you want to accomplish before deciding to add DRM to your eBook.

Lulu Takes Manhattan! – Sponsors Self Publishing Book Expo

November 7th Lulu sponsored and attended the first annual Self-Publishing Book Expo (SPBE) at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers.  While the event drew a modest crowd, SPBE offered a great chance for Lulu to speak with the community both one on one and through our various workshops and executive-led panels.  All of the Lulu staff involved were proud to be a part of something that inspires creativity while informing authors of all their options.  Even our CEO Bob Young made it out to the event to discuss Lulu’s exciting transition into open-publishing!

Lulu had a great presence at SPBE.  We had a sizable booth space, and passed out reusable tote bags.  At one point, people in the hotel lobby asked where they could get one of the “cool orange bags”.  We had a contest and gave away some bose in-ear headphones and a Primer Publishing Pack.  From 9:30 am – 5:00 pm, Lulu staff manned the booth to field questions, educate people on the Lulu process, and offer demonstrations.  Nick and Harish gave a well-attended panel on how social networking will change self-publishing.  I think everyone learned a lot from the experience on both ends.

For me, the event reinforced why I work at Lulu.  At its core, Lulu is about sharing ideas and spreading knowledge.  We understand that you’ve worked really hard to get your content out there and you want to get it in front of as many people as possible.  Things like Lulu’s non-exclusivity and extensive distribution options are things that should go hand-in-hand with self-publishing.  When I explained all the things we currently do and plan on doing to help make an author’s self-published book more visible, people’s jaws honestly dropped! It was a great feeling, and I look forward to more opportunities to interact with customers face-to-face.

We got some great ideas in New York while introducing people to the idea of open-publishing.  Lulu hopes to continue to be a part of events like SPBE that give us the opportunity to just talk with people.  If you have suggestions of events or community gatherings you think Lulu should be a part of, please don’t hesitate to send them in!
