Getting the Most Out of Your Lulu Service

What do weddings, camping trips, and Lulu services have in common? They all go much smoother if you are well prepared. Here are a few quick tips for making the most out of your publishing pack experience.

1. Know what you’re buying.

Services are a big investment of time and money into your book, so you’ll want to make sure you know what you’re buying. If you have a question about what services are for you or what a particular service entails, just ask! We have a whole team dedicated to helping you find the right service for your needs and they’ll be happy to work with you to answer any questions you may have before purchasing.

2. Have your manuscript and cover files ready to go.

The publishing process can go quickly and easily if you’ve got everything ready.  If you’re going right to formatting, make sure your manuscript has been edited already.  If you have book reviews for your back cover, have them back before starting on the design. Taking the extra time and doing the right prep work beforehand will make all the difference in getting a quality product out quickly.

3. Be mindful of time frames.

While we work very hard to get you your books on any deadlines you may have, stuff happens. Allow extra time if you have a deadline or an event for which you need books. Trying to get a book done in a limited amount of time is stressful and could cause you to miss a typo or two.  Publishing a book doesn’t happen overnight, and you don’t want it to. We want to make sure you have ample time to review your files and request changes. As we work hard to make sure your project moves along in a timely manner, we ask the same of you. We do ask all projects be completed within 180 days of purchase, so you’ll want to stay in constant communication with your services coordinator.

4. Ask questions.

We would rather have you ask a thousand questions first and fully understand your purchased services than have you be confused at any part of the process. There are few Lulu Services questions we are not equipped to answer, so ask away!

5. Understand the limits.

We offer a wide variety of services for a wide variety of needs, so talk to our team if you have any questions about what is right for you.  Every book is unique and special, so while the likelihood is high that we’ll be able to work with your book, sometimes there will be something we just can’t do. The Lulu Services department is different than a traditional customer service center. We’ve found the easiest and most efficient way to move through a project is to have one person, your Services Coordinator, dedicated to your project throughout the whole process.  While we’d love to be available to you all the time, sometimes we have to tear ourselves away from our desks and get our beauty rest. We love our authors, so you can always expect a response to any questions within two business days.

    Hi Manish,

To get your book on Amazon, you’ll need a distribution service (GlobalREACH or ExtendedREACH).

We don’t actually have a 5.9 X 6 size, but we do offer a 6X9 size, which is eligible for both ExtendedREACH and GlobalREACH. If you need help changing the size, you may want to consider purchasing our formatting service.

You’ll first need to publish your book on Lulu, which is easy and free if you do it yourself.

    There’s a great video tutorial here: https://support.lulu.com/View.jsp?procId=c864899b401998aa3165fb523b80cda8

  3. Hopefully this site will offer a free ebooks related in IT.

  4. Allison-I know I have asked this question before: how do I produce a recording for an audio book of “FACT OR FOOL”? Will Lulu be marketing audio recording service soon? Rosemary Hovey Everson.

  5. AJ

    Rosemary,

I would say that the best way to create an audio book edition of your work would be to record on your home computer with one of the numerous free programs out there (Garageband for Mac is great, or sound recorder for PC). Depending on how professional you want it to sound, you could even spring for a relatively nice mic at not so bad a cost. Blue brand mics are great, and you can pick them up on the cheap if you get the basic models (The Blue Snowflake is $35).

Once you have your recording made, go to lulu, and create a CD project (www.lulu.com/publish/cd_dvd) upload your audio and BOOM – audio book. You can then sell your CD along with your book as a supplement or all by itself.

    Jean –

We offer a wide variety of ebooks! Many authors choose to offer free ebooks, so I encourage you to search our site for topics that interest you.

    Rosemary –

We don’t actually have a service like that right now, but we love to hear new ideas. I’ll definitely pass it along to our product team.

    David,

At Lulu, it’s free to publish, and authors can create everything from hardcover books to eBooks, photo books to mini books, calendars to cookbooks. Authors keep all the rights to their works and retain 80 percent of the profit they set when their books sell. We operate a global print network and provide worldwide distribution so that authors can reach readers anywhere, including on Amazon.com and Apple’s iBookstore.

  11. I had my book edited but it is printed, one poem or story on each page.My title is

    Beverly,

As an online service, the easiest way to get your book to us is to upload it on lulu.com. You can lay it out however you want, pick a cover, and sell it immediately on the Lulu Marketplace.
