Sell More Books: Super Size Seasonal Discounts

inventory-discounts

Let’s try out a few seasonal slogans you could use for holiday marketing efforts…

“Stuff those stockings with books!”

“Put some books on that shelf by the elf!”

“A dreidel AND a book? Best Hanukah ever!”

“Deck the halls with deals on books and while you’re at it strategically develop a marketing plan that takes advantage of Lulu.com’s seasonal sales and discounts.”

Okay, so that last one doesn’t quite flow off the tongue, but it’s good advice all the same. Coordinating your marketing efforts to coincide with Lulu’s impressive holiday discounts is the next best thing to having your books carried right down your readers’ chimneys by Santa himself.

What’s so great about it? For starters, everyone loves books and they love saving money. All you have to do is share the Lulu discount codes in your email and social media marketing. Don’t forget to also share the expiration date and any restrictions.

Savvy Marketing Tip

Did you know that when Lulu offers a store-wide discount, you can sweeten the deal by adding another 5, 10, or 15% off? That’s right, a 25% off sale can easily be bumped up to 30 or 40% off for huge savings.

Using this strategy, you can make any day Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or create your own huge sale event.

Here’s How to Juice Those Discounts

You can add a discount in the Lulu Bookstore for any printed book or calendar priced above the manufacturing cost.

  • Go to My Projects and click on the project title.
  • Scroll down to Pricing and Creator Revenues and click Edit.
  • Click Pricing Details to view manufacturing and profit splits

  • Click Set Discount and choose the percentage discount you wish to offer.
  • Click Set Discount to apply the discount.
  • Click Pricing Details to view the discounted price and your revenue.
  • Click Save Changes.

The discount is immediately applied to your book or calendar in the Lulu bookstore.

Note: When applied to purchases, Lulu discounts do not affect author revenue. Author-applied discounts reduce profits and therefore reduce author revenue.

Create a Sales Event

Tell everyone about your super sale.

I’m teaming up with Lulu to offer my book, <book title> at a special discount just for friends/family/fans/readers.

For X days only, Enter code XXXXXXX at checkout and save XX%.

Don’t forget, coupon codes are case-sensitive.

Offer expires: MM/DD/YYYY

Include a link to your book’s product page to make it easy for your buyers to make the purchase. And, though we are currently entering the season of sharing and shopping, this strategy works year-round. At Lulu.com, we’re always looking for ways to promote you and sell your books. Whenever we have a sale — seasonal or otherwise — send out an email or post it on social media letting everyone know. After all, ‘tis always the season for reading!

All current discounts, coupon codes, and expiration dates are listed on the Lulu home page.

We plan to use Lulu for printing my latest novel, “The Flagler Legacy”, now in final edit (about 300 pages). Please send me your best prices for printing in January, 2017.

    Hi David,
Congratulations on completing your book. Manufacturing prices are based on several factors, including book size, binding type, and intent to distribute. The calculator on the Lulu Create page allows you to choose size, binding, and paper type for your book. Enter the number of pages and the manufacturing price is displayed. Change any of the physical aspects of the book and the price automatically updates. Here’s a link to the Create page: http://www.lulu.com/create/books

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I would like to purchase “Dear Emma, Letters From Papa” that my husband published through you. How can I do that?

  6. Your discount codes usually have an expiry date, but not a time. Since I’m in Australia, we are several time zones ahead of you, so I guess the code expires at some on the following day here… But I can’t work out what time. If you said that the code expires for example at 11.59 PST on December 2nd, then I would know my customers have until 5pm on December 3rd to take advantage of the discount code. But if you are operating on EST then they can only use it until 2pm. Can you provide this information to us please?

Hello Pip – All Lulu coupons expire at midnight PST, or 3 AM EST. Hope this helps!

    Hi Glenn ,
Happy New Year. Just wondering I am about to make a large order in uk for my book and I’m holding off to see if you have any great New Year deals i.e 40%.

    Regards

  9. If your could get Amazon.ca to remove the outrageous price of $885 from my book Magnolias & Tarantulas by my alias Valentina Bek, we would all be better off. I have tried in vain. This is damaging our sales in a big way.

    Cheers,
    Edith/Valentina

  10. Why don’t you login to Amazon and change it?

  11. Glenn@Lulu

    Hello Edith
I found a copy of your book priced at R 698 – which when converted from the South African Rand equals $50 US Dollars. The book is being imported to South Africa from the USA, so that price appears to cover the shipping and customs cost. When you make your book available for distribution, any online bookstore can offer it of sale at their chosen price – much as if your book was being sold in bookstores that could offer it for sale at full price or at a deep discount. For online shoppers, I am guessing that they will choose the purchase option that is most affordable and convenient for them. If your book is being offered by resellers, you must contact the reseller directly, Amazon will not intervene on your behalf.
