Sonnet Contest for Valentine’s Day

Today we challenge you, our Lulus fair
To write sonnets for your sweet Valentines
That speak of love in tone so debonair
So as to woo our judge to pick your lines

To enter, post your verses here below.
Submit by Monday, February 18th to win.
Please keep them family friendly (this you know)
On Tuesday, then, the judging will begin.

The winner gets 100 Lulu bucks.
So wax poetic now and charm your dear
To blush and swoon and say to you “Aw, shucks!
Now your affection for me is quite clear.”

And now we turn the floor over to you.
So Happy Valentine’s Day from Lulu.

What Are You Thankful For?

I’ll keep this short and sweet so that you can get back to your family, food and festivities. We’re asking a simple, but important question: WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?

In five sentences, answer this question in the comments below for the chance to win $100 to spend at Lulu.com. A team of Lulu judges will select our favorite entry and award the winner at our sole discretion. We will accept entries until 11:59 pm EST on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012. We will announce the winner on our blog by 6 pm EST on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.

We hope you will enjoy writing your entry and reflecting what you are thankful for. For what it counts, we are incredibly thankful for you, the creators of the world.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Congratulations to Lulu’s Family Photos for the Holidays contest winners

The nation is picking more than a chief executive this week. More than 1,500 votes have been tallied to determine the winners of Lulu’s Family Photos for the Holidays contest. And the results come with a clear mandate: more family togetherness! And if it can’t happen in person, photos are the next best thing.

A huge, holiday hug to everyone who entered, and a special congrats to our three winners:

  • Jill Kathan took first prize with a shot titled “Blessed to Have Met Many Generations” featuring a lucky granddaughter being doted on by her grandpa, great great uncles and a great uncle/third cousin.  Jill will make sure her family remains close with the first prize package of a Canon EOS Rebel T3i 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera and DIGIC 4 Imaging, plus a $500 ‘creator’s credit’ to redeem at Lulu to create photo books and/or calendars.
  • Patricia Mozdzen of Dearborn Heights, MI took second prize with “40 Years Married, 3 Generations, & Counting,” celebrating a momentous occasion for one loving couple punctuated by the presence of their children and grandchild. Patricia and family will stay in close contact via her prize:two Google Nexus 7 tablets and $200 to use at Lulu to make a photo book and/or calendar.
  • Sus Raghu took third prize with “Love Is, Above All, The Gift Of Oneself,” a gorgeous photo capturing a tender moment between granddaughter and elderly grandmother. Sus wins a $100 gift card to Target plus $100 to spend at Lulu on photo books and calendars.

Again, thanks, everyone, for sharing the love!  And stay tuned for more contests and chances to share your stories.

Last Day To Enter To Win Family Photo Contest

It’s the final day to submit photos to Lulu’s Family Photos for the Holidays contest to win a Canon Rebel T3i Camera (worth $650), 2 Google Nexus 7 Tablets, Target gift cards and Lulu bucks. After peaking at the submissions that have come in so far, we have to admit we’ve had a few “aaaawwwwww!!!” moments that make us all want to rush to the phone and call our relatives to remind them that we love them and miss them.

This whole contest idea got started when a fellow Lunatic made a photo book of her son’s Little League pictures as a gift for his coach. You really realize the power of a photograph when you see a big burly guy like him tear up as he leafs through the pages.

Grandparents in Revolt & The Lulu Contest to Give ’em What They Want

If you’re a mom or dad, you answer to a lot of different bosses — chief among them, the grandparents. And that group often isn’t shy about sharing suggestions and directives.

In a new national poll commissioned by Lulu, 96 percent of grandparents told us that family togetherness makes for happy holidays, and 90 percent said that they long for more time with their grandkids. But with families scattered every which way and gas prices high, is togetherness too much to ask for?

To avert a national crisis, Lulu launches our first ever Family Photos for the Holidays contest. Even if you can’t be together in person, you can still get face time through photos.

Shelf Unbound Writing Competition for Best Self-Published Book

As self-published authors, we find that it’s often in our own hands to promote our own work. We make daily efforts to find new and innovative ways to spread the word, inspire readers and gain recognition. At Lulu, we are always thrilled to see self-published authors succeed, and we are particularly grateful to the people and organizations that dedicate their efforts to supporting the community of self-published authors.

That said, we are happy to share with you a great new opportunity for self-published authors brought to you by Margaret Brown of Shelf Unbound Magazine. If you don’t know Shelf Unbound, I highly recommend checking it out.

And without further ado… the competition details below in the words of Margaret Brown herself:

Seeking Best Self-Published Book

We launched the Shelf Unbound Writing Competition for Best Self-Published Book a couple of weeks ago. Word of mouth. Social media. Modest expectations. I immediately got a rather scathing email from an industry guy questioning my ethical integrity – how can I justify charging $10 entry fee when there are no self-published books worthy of even being read, he asked.
