2016 Best Gifts: Family Cookbooks

turkey-feastFood sustains us both physically and spiritually. Food is not just fuel to keep the body going – it’s love, friendship, family, memory, comfort, home – it’s life.

Whether I am preparing something just for me, cooking for my partner, preparing a potluck dish to share or planning a dinner party, I often find myself solely focused on the experience of preparing the dishes. The act of cooking, the chopping, measuring, stirring, and simmering always takes me to my happy place. Then of course, there is the eating….

All cooks have our specialties, the recipes we’ve perfected through trial and error, the dishes people request us to bring to every event. My grandmother kept her recipes on index cards in a box above the stove, while in my kitchen, recipes are “organized” in a binder. Some of my favorite recipes are still on my grandmother’s index cards, others are handwritten by mom on note paper while others are printouts shared by hosts following a dinner party or recipes I’ve found online. It’s obvious which are my favorites, they are the recipes covered in notes with some ingredients being scratched out and others added. All are lovingly protected in plastic sleeves.

pecan-pieThis year, I’m combining my specialties with family favorites and printing an “official” family cookbook to give as Christmas gifts to extended family members. I’ve assembled recipes for our nostalgic favorites like mom’s pecan pie and Nanny’s “secret” turkey stuffing, plus our adult favorites like my sister’s eggnog and my brother’s chicken curry. Of course my “regionally famous” pimento cheese and championship chili recipes will be included among many others. To make it ours, I’m asking family members to contribute stories and anecdotes specific to the dishes and/or the holidays in which they were served.

What could be a better gift than all the tastes, smells and memories that span three generations?

As my nieces head off to college, move into their own homes and start their own families, I hope to one day visit and see dog-eared copies of this book annotated and bulging with the recipes they have discovered and perfected. Then I will know my work is complete.

Better Fundraising this Holiday with Lulu

Lulu.com wants to help small businesses and non-profit organizations in our home state of North Carolina raise more funds this holiday season, just by making a free calendar. We’re even throwing in a $1,000 cash bonus to the organization that sells the most calendars between Oct. 5th and Dec. 31st. We’re also including participating organizations in Lulu’s holiday marketing and publicity. It’s simple, too.

To participate:

  • Any small business or non-profit in North Carolina can create an account on Lulu, then a calendar project at no cost.
  • Add your favorite pics to the online calendar template. Drag and drop, and then publish your calendar.
  • Once done, just email fundraising@lulu.com with a link to your project. That’s it.

Your new calendar is a fun way to engage your fans and supporters and it is free to create. A local food truck could make a calendar of their truck outside different places around town. Or a restaurant could create a calendar with recipes and pics of their favorite dishes. The options are endless.

Lulu will include participating local businesses and non-profits in the following marketing as well:

  • Regular social networking blasts to Lulu fans and followers
  • Direct email campaigns
  • Lulu fundraising marketing and PR campaigns

Start your project today and spread some extra cheer this holiday. We can only feature you if we know about your project so please email a link to your calendar to fundraising@lulu.com by the first week of October.

Help Me Pick the Perfect Mother's Day Gift – Please!

letterMay is the month of mom — especially in my family.

Mom’s birthday is the day before Mother’s Day. She’s a real-life Wonder Woman who certainly deserves all the extra attention. But I feel pressure this year to make her gift extra special because this birthday is her big 5-0 (sorry to divulge that, mom!). I want a gift that’s both sentimental and memorable, something that no one else could give her. There’s no better place to look than Lulu, but I can’t decide what to make.

Growing up, mom wanted to be a photographer for National Geographic. So I’ve thought about making a Lulu photo book full of her best pictures mixed in with maps that show where she was when she took them.  I can completely customize it and make a nice, personalized, hard cover book that she’d be proud to display on her coffee table.

Then again, mom also likes to cook, and she has all these recipes that have been passed around our whole family. So another thought is to create a personalized Lulu cookbook full of our family’s favorite dishes.  That’d be great for preserving delicacies like my grandmother’s delicious sweet potato casserole and seven layer cookies.  I even have handwritten recipes and pictures of food I could upload. The cookbook could live on in our family, with regular updates as we collect new recipes.

My mom is also very busy and could always use help with her schedule.  So maybe a personalized Lulu calendar with photo birthday and anniversary reminders would do the trick.  I can pull in pictures of our family and her friends directly from Facebook so it should be pretty simple.  I know she’d use it every day, too.

What do you think? What Lulu creation has gotten the best reaction for you?

I’m hoping you can help me pick out the perfect gift, and get a few ideas of your own. Right now you can save 15% on all photo books and calendars (use code MOM15 at checkout) so it’s a great time to make mom a remarkable present.

Hurry though, Mother’s Day is only 2 weeks away.
