Margaret Holland says that keeping a journal was first an assignment, but over time, it took on a larger purpose as she began to understand herself and her experiences more clearly. She determined a book, based on her journals, would help others who might also be suffering. (Excerpt, The Brotherhood of Silence hardcover dust jacket)

From the start, I undertook editing The Brotherhood of Silence to help Margaret fulfill her dream. At her age, she couldn’t do it on her own. Even though she is nearly 82 now, her desire remains the same: to help others who are suffering in order to encourage them.

Getting Started: Margaret’s Journals

Without having done anything like this before, I had no idea how to proceed. I couldn’t envision how to condense hundreds of pages of Margaret’s 29 journals into a readable form, or the countless hours it would take to type, edit, and transition the key entries. If I managed to produce a manuscript, how could I ever navigate the publishing morass? The whole project overwhelmed me. I asked for God’s wisdom and skill. One day at a time swam into my mind.

I knew that it was imperative to preserve Margaret’s voice so that the reader could “walk with her” through enormous challenges and emerge changed. After reading the full story, I knew it was a winner and told her so. Her delight put fuel in my tank, so I began typing, creating the format as I went. Although I could never see very far ahead, the creative process kept me engaged.

Although my eyes became red and strained after about three hours darting from her typed page to the computer screen and back, I reminded myself of Margaret at her typewriter for years, pouring out her heart and soul, trying to make sense of what was happening to her.

“Writing down the details of my daily life, getting everything out onto paper with a helpful purpose in mind and then re-reading them helped me recognize how much I had overcome.” She later wrote, “Thank God for my journals and the book that will come out of them. I don’t know what I would have done without this project. . . . Getting all of my feelings out and dealing with them in writing has been priceless therapy.”

After the 3rd draft, I committed our project to Lulu. I wrote to several authors who gave the company rave reviews. After editorial reviews, subsequent rewrites and twelve revisions, we finally submitted the book for printing, eagerly anticipating the day when Margaret would hold a copy in her hands. And we weren’t disappointed! Without the help of my assistant editor, copy editors and Lulu’s skilled individuals, I’d still be revising.

Spread Happiness: Create Your Own Coloring Book

Coloring books have always been a simple, calming way to entertain children. Recently, a new kind of coloring book has found a place in the book world—adult coloring books. The simple act of selecting colors and turning a line drawing into a rich, colorful piece of art, has the ability to soothe our overwrought minds, to help us relax and disconnect from our busy lives.

Here at Lulu we are keenly aware of the growing market for coloring books for all ages. Glenn detailed some of the reasons why coloring books are so popular in this post. Today we will show you how you can make the world a happier place by making your own coloring book on Lulu.com!

Start by creating a Lulu account then go to the Lulu Book Builder. We don’t offer a specific coloring book format, but we strongly recommend selecting the Premium Paperback option > Black & White printing  >  White paper. The paper weight for this option is heavy enough to prevent color bleed. It’s also uncoated, so you don’t have to worry about colors smudging or running.

Premium paperbacks come in a variety of sizes. For a coloring book, something larger like 8.5” x 11” is usually best, as you want to have a large, detailed image to color. Other sizes will work too—that’s the beauty of self-publishing; it’s up to you!

Premium paperbacks can be bound using any of our three methods (Perfect, Coil, or Saddle Stitch), but for any book that you’d like to sell in online bookstores, you’ll want to use Perfect binding. Coil and Saddle-Stitch work for coloring books meant for personal use or to be sold only in the Lulu.com bookstore.

Now that you’ve selected the style and binding, you’re going to need to format your file to make a beautiful book. It’s important to be aware that, even with the thicker white paper, some of the color may show through the page. Therefore, you may want to place only one image per sheet of paper rather than printing images back to back. Also, don’t forget the first page of the file will print on the right side of the book, as will all odd numbered pages. Keep this in mind if you have any images that span two pages.

And lastly, to ensure none of your artwork is lost during trimming and binding, make sure your image is at least .25 inches from the edge of the page.

            Black & White ink on White Paper

When it comes to finding an editor to help you with your book, make sure it’s someone who responds to what you’ve written and how you’ve written it. Make no mistake: no one likes to be edited. It can be an incredibly painful process. You’re basically paying someone to poke holes in what you’ve done and critique every aspect of it from concept to comma use. Like many things in the publishing process, it requires a leap of faith, and if you want to ensure your book is marketable—or at the very least navigable to readers—then it’s absolutely necessary.

Here are a few pointers for starting the editing process, from editing expert Ellie Maas Davis:

1. Make sure your editor specializes in your genre—if you’ve written a book about the Civil War or advanced polynomials, by all means, find an editor who has edited similar titles. If you have an uncommon topic, a Lulu Services rep will be happy to give you background information about the editor most likely to tackle your manuscript.
