Myth, Fact, and Confusion in the Disappearances of Children in Guatemala
7,000 word magazine article on the rumors and stories that surrounded the alleged disappearances of children in Guatemala in the early 1990s. The article was prompted by an attack that took place in San Cristobal Verapaz, Guatemala, on an American tourist, June Weinstock, in early 1994. A mob of people, under the mistaken belief that Weinstock was a witch who stole children, nearly beat her to death. The article examines some of the social forces as well as the myths and stories that may have led to the attack, especially the increasing number of adoptions of Guatemalan children by Americans. Despite persistent allegations that many of these adoptions were illegal, the truth of the matter was difficult to discern.
