BENT BRANCHES is a moving, often heartbreaking tale spanning almost seventy years in the life of a family. It portrays the trials and triumphs of its family members, especially those of mother and daughter, as they build their lives in the light and shadow of cataclysmic events. It begins with a visit to the past and stays there, for the first half; moving through Soviet-occupied Poland, to the Warsaw Ghetto, back to pre-war Poland, then forward to post-war Paris and the American-occupied zone in Germany. It spends a few moments in Eastern Europe during the Cold War and 1950s Australia, then moves on to Canada, where it remains, except for a sojourn to the Dead Sea. At the end of the millennium this compelling saga takes a final twist.

24-Apr-2017I recently read Bent Branches and was rapt in the drama of the stories. I was impressed not only by the quality of the prose, but also by the richness and clarity of Ms. Nadjman's perceptions, even as a child. I was touched both by her suffering and by her innocence which, it seems to me, continued into adulthood. No-one has described more clearly or with more poetry the way in which the mother's experience in the Holocaust penetrated her daughter's existence. I preferred some stories to others, though I relished all of them. the story that I found most successful, and very painful, was Shoah Business. The way the author weaved together the strands in it was terrific.
7-Mar-2016I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book from the author herself and it blew me away! Wonderful, evocative writing that drew me and and didn't let go. Do yourself a favour and get ahold of a copy of this book.
11-Aug-2013I am a lifelong professor of European History, and op-ed columnist and book reviewer for several newspapers. I was approached by Ms. Zajdman to read through her stories to make sure there were no historical slips. I didn’t find any, and instead found myself becoming fascinated by the stories themselves. I have read many narratives by Holocaust survivors as well as reading standard historical works by writers like Hilberg, Davidowicz, Marrus, etc., and I still found this more intimate and personal memoir gripping, moving, and in places, very funny. Given my own background, I was most interested in Renata’s adventures in the war years and at the end of the war, but the postwar stories of the family were a natural extension, and held my interest as well. The descriptive writing is terrific. The book deserves a wide audience, and I hope it gets one.
18-Mar-2013Nadja Zajdman's wonderful book BENT BRANCHES is a short story collection that reads like a novel. Strong character portraits, descriptive settings and an intricate plot weave Renata's daring and courageous feats to survive the horrors of the Holocaust with the present effects of these experiences on her and her family. Nightmare memories and the determination to live life make the meaning of BENT BRANCHES clear. The characters suffer, rejoice, bend with whatever life brings them and continue on with solid roots in family and in life. All the details, from the first story to the last, move the narrative forward and keep the reader wanting to know more, fascinated to see how one event connects to another, creating one unifying force, like a magnificent tapestry. BENT BRANCHES is a work of art.
