This calendar is the result of a collaborative effort. Its producers are Brights who meet in the Action Forums of The Brights’ Network. As Brights, they have in common a naturalistic worldview, free of supernaturalism. The photos and quotes included are meant to show just how awesome our universe is. The various events marked in this calendar have been chosen by individual Brights. They represent a spectrum of achievements selected to remember that humanity has always been striving forward, trying to improve both ourselves and our environment. The calendar begins with October 2007 and runs through the year 2008. The sunrises and sunsets featured over this 15-month period are truly spectacular. Hopefully, I have also been able to capture the spiritual essence of each scene with an appropriate verse from Scripture. For example, the photo on the cover is also featured on the November 2008 page, as it was a November, 2004 sunrise taken from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. (A larger view of this photo can be seen by clicking on "preview") The verse for this photo is "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:5. This seemed appropriate for what one sees in this sunrise - the "fingers of God," so to speak, poking through the dark clouds. As you schedule your life each week and month, if you would like to be reminded of the beauty before us each day, then this calendar is for you.

Explore the wonderous dichotomy of the tribal region of the Northern Areas of Pakistan on a photographic journey. Photographer Brent Mittelstaedt's travels to Gilgit, Pakistan in March of 2007 gave his heart a burden for the people of the area and for the Muslim people. This calender is the first project of the future not-for-profit photography studio "Photos for the Forgotten". All the procedees of sales from this calender will be going to the Gilgit Blind and Handicapped School for use in their outreach projects. The treatment of the blind and handicapped in the rural Muslim world are chilling; from being chained to the wall for life, to never being allowed the respect of land and a house of their own, to disownment by their families. The organization this calender will help to support uses money in an amazingly powerful way to provide schooling, wheelchairs and teaching aides to those in need. MOLAS! The American Influence. The Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands, located off the Atlantic Coast of Panama, create intricate designs, called molas, by using a reverse appliqué technique that involves cutting through layers of brightly colored cloth to reveal the different fabrics beneath. Each Kuna artist creates her unique designs and patterns. She may incorporate traditional or modern elements or in some cases, both. Early mola designs evolved out of pre-Hispanic body painting. Today, mola designs may include abstract geometric designs; motifs from the natural world; or themes related to politics, popular culture, or Kuna legends. These molas show how Americans living in the Panama Canal Zone influenced these talented artists to create molas that reflect American work, culture and family.
