Description:

Once upon a time, in New York City, two girls meet a mysterious stranger, Bear, who comes to their door one winter night. Rose quickly befriends him, but Blanche is suspicious. To her, Bear seems to be a dangerous person who is hiding things. She's seen him covertly associate with the "drug crowd" at their high school and he tries to sell valuable church artifacts to shady dealers. He is somehow connected to the old abandoned church next to their high school. But Rose is impressed by Bear's love and knowledge of literature and poetry. Taking her and Blanche to the opera confirms for her that Bear is trustworthy. And yet, as events unfold, even Rose must admit that Bear is hiding dangerous activities from them. A classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm comes to life as two very different sisters, timid Blanche and impulsive Rose, seek to discover Bear's identity and secret mission. New 2008 revision of a teen novel that has become a cult favorite with hundreds of readers.

"The Shadow of the Bear" is a really unique book. I was so excited when I found it because it is truly a rare find. It is partly a mystery, partly a coming of age story for Rose and Blanche, all the while weaving in elements from the Grimm Brother's fairytale "Snow White and Rose Red". (NOT Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, ok? Different story, similar title.) The characters are the first thing about this book that makes me willing to pay $35 dollars to get a beautiful new re-edited edition of this story. They are utterly believable and I actually care what happens to them. A lot. The plot, the vivid imagery and the fantastic writing style of Regina Doman are some more reasons I love this book. If murder, justice, unjust imprisonment, kidnapping, a secret treasure, or a light touch of a budding romance holds any interest for you at all, you should give this book a try.

I also wanted to add that I loved the beautiful and inspiring portrayal of the Catholic faith in this story. It is lightly interspersed, but for me, as a Catholic, it makes the story even more meaningful. If you are not, I would still highly recommend the story just for a fun read, especially if you like fairytale retellings.

Double Thumbs-Up!!!

This book is absolutely phenomenal with its unforgettable characters and fast-paced plot. Based on Grimm's fairy tale of Snow White and Rose Red, Regina Doman tells the story of sisters Blanche and Rose, whose lives change dramatically due to the unexpected friendship of a man who calls himself Bear. The girls are quickly caught up in the mystery that surrounds Bear, which leads to danger and life-threatening situations. This is a gripping story of love and sacrifice, as well as an amazing adventure you won't want to miss out on. ~Mae 9/5/07

This book is awesome! I was so glad to read a great modern book. Usually the only good books are the ones that were written in the 19th and the early 20th centuries. Thank you Regina Doman for writing Shadow of the Bear. I had to keep buying new copies of this book because friends kept on borrowing it from me. I never got the borrowed books back. But, hey I can't blame them! I reread this book all the time. This story never gets old. This book is a must for teens and adults. ~Claire 9/5/07
