I've tried reading a number of books regarding pain, but this one is the pick of the bunch. It has clarified a lot of things for me and given me a greater sense of confidence going forward.
The exercises seem easy and achievable. The most important thing though is that I was drawn in. The first time I read the book I just read it straight, but this last time I did all the practical exercises and they really do help. I have drawn my healthy spine wheel and know how to improve it.
A highly recommended read for anyone with back pain like mine!

This book has helped me a lot. I have more idea about what to do for my back pain when it comes on.
I passed it onto my friend who also says it's helping her!

I have recently read this book and found it helpful and clear. The talk about the placebo effect was very interesting and had me thinking about my health in a whole new way. I've always been a believer in mind over matter - this book has helped me understand how that can work! I'm trying the exercises and relaxation techniques too. We'll see how it all goes...
As an old Physio colleague of David's art Dorset Rehab I was happy to see this book finally published. It is a good read and very helpful for me with managing chronic pain sufferers. They like it because it's easily understood and gives lots of exercise and stress management tips. I've seen some great turn arounds in the last month or two thanks to this book. Well done Davo!
I congratulate the author on this brave and unique book. Pain is not an easy topic to cover - as it can be quite complex. David's book manages to balance the complexity well and his advice is very grounded and practical. On the down side I feel the pictures could be clearer and there were a couple of typos in the later sections of the book. Overall a very helpful read - I myself have not experienced pain as badly as the case studies in his book, but I have recommended it to friends and family members who have.
An uplifting book from a professional with personal experience of dealing with chronic pain. Apart from sound advice on physical therapy, Overcoming Pain addresses the pyscho-social issues that contribute to pain and result in impairment. The book's greatest strength lies in the inspiration that it gives. I hope many suffers of chronic pain have the opportunity to read the book, and no longer feel powerless with regard to their condition.
A book that relates to everyone. Definitely an easy reading, informative and direct approach to dealing with pain. The exercises helped so much, David has also made it easy when it comes to exercising and overcoming pain, especially when dealing with my scoliosis. I recommend this book to everyone out there!
As a medical student constantly reading text books I found this book a welcome relief. David obviously knows his stuff, but it's his language that's truly refreshing. Direct and simple. The words flow very well - a great achievement considering the sensitive topic being discussed.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone with pain trouble, or those working with people in pain. It's an easy and valuable read.

As a qualified Exercise Therapist I found this book by David Hall to be a great resource and eye opener to understanding the different challanges so many people face when experiencing pain. David's many insights & matter of fact explanations, as both a professional Physiotherapist and someone who has experienced pain himself, are practical & easy to read. Highly recommended reading for professionals treating individuals with chronic pain, people suffering pain themselves and for friends and family to have a greater understanding of what pain sufferers are going through.
Aimed squarely at those suffering chronic pain on a daily basis, this brilliantly practical book manages to demystify the concept of pain as a biopsychosocial entity as well as offering a plethora of useful tips and strategies.
As a neurologist, I frequently recommend this book to my patients as a means of offering hope and encouragement in a world where there is frequently a tendency to "over-medicalise" and overinterpret symptoms and investigation results.
Congratulations to David Hall for compiling his considerable professional experience into one neat accessible volume.
I recommend this book unconditionally.

As one of the original editors and reviewers of this book I'm delighted to see the progress it is making. This is a unique book that promises to help many people. Congratulations Dave on your words of wisdom!
An easy to read book - interesting in the correlation between the mind and the body. I have passed it on to several friends, some with health professional backgrounds and some not. Well done for addressing these issues. I intend to read the latest version again - in the hope of not only addressing pain issues I may have but also hopefully prevention of pain in the future.
My back pain makes me an expert in the field and I can tell you that this book gives you something else, no matter how widely you've read. In simple, engaging prose, I've been led on a journey back to myself as the owner of my pain. That there are attitudinal things in me that have helped keep me where I am. This was something which at first struck me as an unwanted, uncomfortable thought, but how empowering it is to start fixing yourself on all levels, from the inside rather than just having the clinicians' shrugging off of your condition as life-long. Read this book.
This book was a revelation for me. I have been a long term back pain sufferer, and tried every treatment imaginable. I had no idea that my back pain was so related to my thoughts and beliefs. The book made me look at my back pain with fresh eyes and I can honestly say I felt better straight away. I'm looking forward to further recovery using the guidance this book is providing. If you have back pain, or any pain... read this book!
This book was given to me by a friend who knew I was suffering with back pain. It has been a great help.
For the first time I feel I understand my pain, and have some direction in what to do about it. The back exercises in particular have been very helpful. The stress management parts are also very important.

It has been really great to find a book that everyone can understand - no matter what their background. Even though some of the concepts in this book are quite complicated, the explanations are clear and easy to understand, even if you are not a health professional. Using actual examples also gives you the opportunity to assess your own experience in a realistic way.
A great book for the normal person!
