On this tape, James tells about growing up in a female body in the 1950’s, and how he struggled with the conventions of rigid gender roles. He describes his attempts to fit in as a child and adolescent. In spite of feeling more male than female, James was involved in the rise of feminism and in the Gay and Lesbian pride movement in the late 1960’s and early ‘70’s. He lived as a lesbian for 22 years openly acknowledging his sense of incongruity between his body and his psyche. This is the story of his choice to dramatically resolve the incongruity and to live his life fully as a man. This is the story of the positive and negative consequences of that choice.
