Probably my favorite of the fairy tale novels (though they are all so spectacular its hard to decide) this book tells the story of Bear and Blanche, well-loved characters introduced in the first book, Shadow of the Bear. This book is packed with suspense from the very first page up until the very last. Still, author Regina Doman manages to knit humor and laughs throughout the book, (most memorable examples being the Franciscan Friars.) Expect a tale of chilling mystery and breathtaking excitement but also of faith, trust, and true love because this story has it all! ~Mae

"Black as Night," the second in a series of fairytales retold by Regina Doman, though very different in tone and style from its predecessor, "The Shadow of the Bear," is a worthy sequel. It continues the story of Blanche, the elder of the two Brier sisters. It tells the story from both her and Bear's point of view, alternating back and forth, which I really appreciate. (Actually, I would have loved that for "The Shadow of the Bear". Even if R. D. went back and wrote that story again from Bear and Fish's point of view, I would totally buy that. Actually, that would be unbelievably wonderful!) The fairytale elements from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves," the Grimm's fairytale that is being retold in this volume, are well integrated into the storyline. The story does get dark, as everything seems to be conspiring against Blanche, left alone to struggle against malevolent forces that seem determined to harm her. She is also struggling to decide what her future holds for her and whether Bear is who she is meant to marry. This is a tale of courage and perseverance in the face of darkness and evil. Of faith and trust in the person you most care about. Of a love tried though extraordinary circumstances. But does courage triumph? Is that person worthy of such trust? Does true love find a way through the lies and deceit that has woven a web of shadow over Blanche Brier? If you know the fairytale, you might have a guess, but as to how it all works out in this new retelling of the classic, go ahead and read it to find out for yourself.

I personally loved the Franciscan Friars in this book. They were so funny and reminded me of so many of the ones that I have actually met. Love the references to other works of prose and poetry, and the Unicorn Tapestries. Just a great read. And be glad that "Waking Rose" is now out to complete the Brier/Denniston story because waiting for each of these books was rough!

This is such a fantastic book! I absolutely loved it. Bear and Blanche are my favorite characters in all of Regina Doman's books. One gets pulled into the story in the first chapter and stays in suspense until the very end. Never a dull page! Regina Doman is an amazing writer and my family and I are huge fans of her books. I would strongly recommend her books to all teens and adults. ~Claire 9/5/07
