Robert E. Harrill -- also known as the Ft. Fisher Hermit -- lived life on his own terms, living on a North Carolina beach for 17 years on an abandoned plot of government land. He lived on seafood and wild berries, and the donations from acting as tour guide and lecturer to the thousands of tourists who came to see him each year. He taught them where to fish, what to see, and even how to live until his "mysterious" death.
