In Biblical accounts of theophany, from Abraham to Moses to Ezekiel to Paul, those on whom revelation falls mostly find God in thundering voices, in pillars of smoke and fire, or in blinding visions that leave them shaking with revealed Truth. In Pynchon's world, finding God is more akin to finding a quarter in the coin-slot of a payphone. What leaves us shaking is the unexpectedness of finding it there, having to ask ourselves what hidden impulse drove us to check in the first place.

Then, of course, the coin might be counterfeit, a mere slug. Should we bite it and find out? Should we spend it quickly and pass the problem on to someone else? Should we sneak it back into the coin-slot and try to forget having found it at all?
