Oaxaca's indigenous communities have been struggling for dignity, sovereignty, and survival since the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Last summer a teacher's strike sparked a broader uprising, tapping into Oaxaca's strong traditions of resistance. For a brief moment, the struggle held the world's attention as federal and state police fought with the movement for control of the state's capital.
