Description:

Leavened with humour and astute observation, Glasser presents a harsh and uncompromising view of the Vietnam era military and San Francisco street life during the mid 1960s. After the first chapter, the reader becomes ‘the traveller’ on a series of surreal adventures spanning the socially volatile years between 1965 – 1969. Along the way, we encounter strange and nefarious characters, drugs, and the social turmoil at epicenter of the counterculture movement. The central character’s wry, philosophical observations about his adventures/misadventures simply, but eloquently underscore the bizarre ambience of the time.

An excellent book! I was drawn through 60s America at a breathtaking pace with so much detail that it could only have been written by someone who was there. It reads like the lost next installment of Jack Kerouac's 'On The Road'. Forget the summer of love, George Glasser shows a very different side to to a unique time in American history. I look forward to the follow up Mr Glasser(there is going to be a follow up???)

Fascinating Read

This book is not something I would normally pick up to read, but having been recommended by an associate, I admit to being drawn in to the story and thouroughly enjoying it.

I read your book today in its entirety.

In today's world this book should be everywhere! You captured everything so completely that you took me back in time. The only difference was the location; I lived in New York City.

It parallels today's world: same rhetoric; same empty reasons for war; same greed for money and power; and the same mindless deaths of the young.

How come this book was not publicized? Especially when people my age would want to read it given the opportunity.

Great Book!!! 6 star rating! [ No Rating ] 8 Nov 2007 (updated 8 Nov 2007)

It was like you were there and I was! The author's adventures are true to life as I remember them. I also was in the Air Force in Sacramento and went to San Francisco many times between 1966 and 1972.

People of all ages should read this book. Those of us that were around in the 60's will love it and see that the "summer of love" was not all love and that the Viet Nam war for many was a total fraud and killed all those guys for nothing.

For those that are younger, they will learn what it was like then and see how similar it is to today's idiotic and wasteful war and our total idiot of a presidient. Maybe some of the kids in their teens and 20's will get off their asses and take ACTION to stop this war!
An excellent read!

A street-level view of life in 60s America. Glasser leads us on a journey of discovery across the States. The reader becomes the traveller in a world populated by bizarre characters, military conscription, and drug-taking. You start to feel like a Carlos Castaneda character where Don Juan is replaced by a series of unlikely teachers in the situations experienced along the way. A description of drug-induced hallucination cleverly provides the feeling of having the experience without having to take the substance. A highly entertaining read that will leave you wanting some more!

I thought this was going to be another 1960s 'retro' sort of work when it was recommended to me, but I found it quite the contrary. The casual narrative style with brutally frank accounts takes the reader on a surreal journey spanning the socially volatile years beginning in 1965 - 1969. The protagonist seemingly stumbles from the backwaters of Florida into San Francisco and at the epicenter of the 'counterculture revolution'. His adventures/misadventures take you across the US and deep into Mexico. It's not like any other book I have read about the 1960s.
