Description:

The Light of Alexandria is the story of the first thousand years of science, from the birth of the world’s first two scientists, Thales and Anaximander, until the final destruction of the greatest library of the ancient world in the year 415. The life stories of the most famous and important people in history from 600 BCE to 415 CE are also told: Cleopatra, Caesar and Marc Antony, Draco and Spartacus, Caligula and Hannibal. The development of many aspects of life that we associate with the modern day are told about as well: shopping malls, pipe organs, machine guns, vending machines, robots for war, even an analog computer built 2100 years ago and much more. The human mind never stops wondering, and this is the story of the first thousand years of our commitment to that wonder.

It's a real kick for me to review this fine work of art by a new friend of mine in the Free State. Although Light reaches a general audience of any educational level, it's going to be more appreciated by those of us who went through some college prerequisites.

Problem is all my knowledge of that era was and is fragmented and I never understood the sequence of the lives. Until now.

Maynard fills in the gaps.

One comes away with a sense of immense vitality of these people, and relevance to our own era. Maynard gives us people we'd like to chew the fat with.

James shares his thoughts and discoveries in language that the layperson feels comfortable with. (I review this book completely on my Web commentary site, TheCoffeeCoaster.com. Trust me, you're going to want to have this one in your collection.)

Thanks, James.
