A Field Guide to the Saints: The Traveller's Illustrated Handbook To Church Art provides a fun and easy way to identify the saints found in churches and museums, and to learn their stories.

Especially designed for travellers visiting southern Europe (but relevant anywhere that saints are found), this book allows you to solve the mystery of "Who is that saint?". It's a thrill to decode these images using the easy-to-read identification "clue list," and doing so can make visits to churches and museums a truly fun experience, a game anyone can play.

If you are headed to Europe, bring this delightful, authoritative, and practical book along! You'll love reading the stories of the saints. The material is engaging and slightly irreverent, but always informative.

"Absolutely Delightful in it's whimsical and informative details on the Lives of the Saints!" - Helen H. Bayly, Florence Convocation on Art and Clutural Initiatives, Firenze, Italia.

Field Guide to the Saints - Highly recommended [ No Rating ] 5 Jan 2008 (updated 5 Jan 2008)

I was delighted to find the book easy to understand and a fun read. I was always intimidated by my lack of knowlege about the paintings I would see in museums and churches on my travels, but my first visit to a rather famous church - armed with the book - provided much entertainment for the group I was with as we started to "see" the attributes in the paintings then finding them in the "Object Clue List." (a very clever key to identifying the saints) After that it was easy to find and read all about the saints and compare the attributes in the beautiful pictures. The book was the hit of the afternoon and everyone agreed they had never spent such an intimate and enjoyable time on a church tour before.

What a gem of a book! If you've ever stood in front of a painting, puzzling over the depiction of a mysterious individual with a halo, this book is for you. You'll learn how to discern a saint's identity from various objects that are typically pictured with each saint. After reading this book, I pulled out my coffee table art books, searching for saints to identify. The index in this book makes it easy--absorbing and educational for adults, and a fun way to help children understand art. Along with the original artwork accompanying each saint's description, it would have been great to include an historical painting to illustrate the use of "saintly" objects throughout history. Highly recommended.
