Description:

ForeWord Magazine started this service because so many of the tasks associated with getting a book to market can be overwhelming to a smaller press who may not have the staff or finances to explore the opportunities in foreign rights sales. Our mission, beyond exposing great books to the trade from the independent press sector through reviews and feature stories in the magazine, is to create ways for publishers to have access to the same services larger houses take advantage of due to their size. For $150, we will take your book to one of the following international book fairs: Beijing, Frankfurt, London or Bologna. In Beijing, Frankfurt, London, and Bologna, publishers rent a stand in much the same way they do for BEA, ALA and the regional bookseller shows. But instead of a steady stream of potential trade buyers walking by or meeting with reps to talk about new titles, shipping discounts and/or meeting the author at domestic shows, the purpose for showcasing titles overseas is to attract the attention of agents or foreign publishers interested in acquiring the rights to your title(s) for a particular country. The sale of these rights is an excellent source of additional income for smaller presses--but it involves a commitment that begins with exposing your titles to this market and properly following up. The cost of the stand, travel expenses and time out of office is often prohibitive for small presses to even think about getting started in the process. ForeWord Magazine is one of several companies who try to make these financial obstacles easier to bear with co-operative spaces. Your exhibit fee pays for this access through us: we rent and manage the stand, using our international brand identity and a decade of experience and contacts that have helped introduce many publishers to the foreign rights marketplace. Our stand is limited to about a hundred titles. We read at least some portion of the book, organize it in a category appropriate shelf, direct visiting agents as well as walk-by traffic to specific titles once we have understood their needs and interests. We have meetings at the booth with agents and distribution clients all week long-many who have done business with us over the years and know we host a representative slice of the U.S. independent press marketplace at our booth. When agents express an interest in any title, we exchange cards and I deliver the information to the publisher upon my return, usually with a general letter about the show itself and ways to proceed. A black and white catalogue of participating titles is distributed at the fair in addition to copies of ForeWord Magazine. Typically, we have "physical" inquiries on about 20% of the titles, but many publishers are contacted through the catalogue and the magazine outside of us. Since we primarily act as a lead generator, it is hard to give you details on specific deals--however, my presumptions that we are successful for many is based on the fact that we have a number of return publishers who go with us each year with certain countries listed as "no longer available." We do have a list of testimonies vouching for our services if you would like to hear more. We always encourage publishers to come to the fair if possible, using the our stand as a home base. It allows you to forego much of the financial requirements of the stand and shipping, and the flexibility to show up for just a few days instead of committing to a week or longer. If a trip was possible, you would be encouraged to walk through the halls (eleven in Frankfurt!) looking for publishers who produce books in your category, inquiring about their interest in acquiring new titles. Many, like you, are small and can't afford to bring staff people with them, so they depend on this face-to-face method of discovery for bulking their own list. It is this first step in developing relationships with foreign markets that eventually leads to a situation where they are meeting at YOUR stand to talk about forthcoming titles they might like to co-publish or distribute overseas-helping you underwrite the cost of your next project.
