Description:

An adventurer in the classic sense, Hugh Millais has made a career of being in the right place at the right time. Now, in his 78th year, Millais has chosen to release a unique memoir, the Name Dropper’s Cookbook. The great grandson of painter John Everett Millais, Hugh Millais is the sort of well connected Epicure we’d all like to have round for dinner. In the process of building Salvador Dali’s house, living with Orson Welles for a year, sleeping between Ava Gardner and Marlene Dietrich and seeing his great friend Hemingway cry giving away his last bottle of vodka, Hugh picked up his friends’ favourite recipes along the way. Spanning countless countries and with an outrageous anecdote for every dish, The Name Dropper’s Cookbook is an ingenious look at the life and times of Hugh Millais and his notorious friends.

I was given this book recently as I love biographies but I have to say the recipes are out of this world, absolutely inspired! Like the man himself, original, quirky and fun, I've tried most of them to my friends' utter delight and serve each with a story from the book. More please!

I never write reviews but I had to say this is the funniest, most fascinating autobiography, I have it in my kitchen and I invite friends round for name dropper parties.

Great.

Name Dropper's Cookbook - Hugh Millais [ No Rating ] 13 Nov 2007
A cut above other cookery books as it is but more than this, Name Dropper's is a memoir by one of the most interesting characters you've never heard of. He literally knew everyone, simply by getting into scrapes, partying, gallavanting, Millais managed to turn his heritage into more than a meal ticket, he turned the good life into a profession. The stories are fascinating, not only by virtue of the famous faces and hijinks but by Millais' talent for storytelling, verse, self-deprecation and drama. If only all of us could live this well and tell the tale.
