Why do some self-published authors fail to reach their sales potential even with a good marketing package? Because they often fail to meet consumer expectations set by high quality, traditionally published books. This may not make a difference if you are simply publishing a book to pass on to your family and friends, but if you are self-publishing in order to share your work with a larger audience, or with the intention of attracting traditional publishers, then it may be important to utilize resources that will help you create a more commercially viable book.
Our copyediting services
Every author is unique, which makes every manuscript unique. Authors may have different publishing goals and personal intentions, which may determine the overall direction of their project. In many cases, this distinction makes it difficult for us to presuppose the level of service that may benefit a manuscript without first taking the time to review the work. As a result, we offer authors the opportunity to contact us directly to discuss service options or to request a free sample edit of their manuscript. This allows us to get a sense of the material in order to determine the edit or format-level needed, and provides authors with a customized preview of our editorial recommendations.
During the sample process, we will also supply you with a free quote, which will list edit details, a flat rate fee, and scheduling options—all this before you purchase a service. There is no obligation.
We offer the following copyediting services:
Proofreading
Proofreading services are available for those with a manuscript in need of a light review for basic errors and are typically obtained after a work has been professionally edited. (Details...)
Basic Editing (Edit level 1)
Basic Editing is first-level copyediting, which includes a review of the manuscript for typographical errors, misspelled words, grammatical errors, punctuation, incorrect usage, and consistency. (Details...)
Moderate Editing (Edit level 2)
Moderate Editing is second-level copyediting, which includes an edit for basic spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage errors in addition to a review for sentence clarity, word choice, redundancies, and maintenance of tone/voice. (Details...)
Extensive Editing (Edit level 3)
Extensive Editing is third-level copyediting, which includes an edit of the manuscript for basic and moderate errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, usage, and sentence clarity in addition to a review for content organization and an evaluation of overall flow, transitions, sentence structure, and presentation. (Details...)
Additional Services
We offer a variety of additional services, including Manuscript Formatting (book design and layout), Upload Services, PDF Creation, and Publishing Consultations. (Details...)
We charge a per-word rate, so we will request the full word count of your manuscript in order to determine your project fee. This method enables us to base our fees on the size and needs of your specific manuscript rather than an hourly rate or a range rate, which may be more costly. (Inquire about our Deferred Payment Option.) Our rates range from $0.006 - $0.02 per word depending on edit level. (Example: A Proofread for a 50,000-word manuscript would be $300.00. Find out how to determine your word count in Microsoft Word here.)
What kind of work do we accept?
We specialize in all forms of genre fiction, general non-fiction, children's fiction, young adult, autobiographies, and self-help; however, we will consider all other works. We work best with authors who are committed to the art of writing or who feel passionate about their work—whatever the genre.
Have we ever turned down material?
Yes, on a few occasions. This is normally due to the fact that the material may need highly extensive content revision before being ready for the copyediting process. This can occur if the work has not yet been fully written or researched. If you are uncertain whether your work falls into this category, we would be glad to offer you a free evaluation. In some cases, we may recommend a detailed content review, which is meant to assist authors with their beginning drafts. (Review details here.)
What sets us apart from other editors?
Experience - Professionalism - Commitment - Sensitivity - Honesty. We take pride in providing beginning and established authors with affordable, professional copyediting and pre-publication services. Although we specialize in working with beginning authors, our experience in the traditional publishing industry (Random House/Ballantine Books) allows us to provide authors with the same level of quality they could expect to receive through a traditional publishing house, with an emphasis on personal attention throughout the entire publishing process. Questions? First-time author?
We will walk you through the pre-production and publishing process and provide you with a free publishing consultation. (We also work well with the technologically-challenged!) Read what some of our published authors have to say about us.
