Description:Colonial Council Minutes - 1766 - Digitized images of South Carolina Council Minutes are colonial records for the entire year of 1766. Colonist came because they were promised land or they moved into an area and requested land. The first step in obtaining land in colonial times was a petition to the council, the council minutes record all those petitions for land. The South Carolina Council Minutes of 1766 even includes a petition for redress from a brother, who claims that his sister was kidnapped and forced to marry against her will. There is a passenger list of immigrants from Europe who were promised land and seek petitions, in some cases even their ages are given. Land was given based on headrights, 50 to 100 acres for the head of the household and 50 acres for each member of the household.
