At first look this journal is something special. With it’s full colour glossy front and back cover featuring the artwork of Emmanuelle Brochier (front cover) and Kali 61 (back cover) it is certainly the most professional looking TOPY release I’ve seen. The visual feast continues throughout the journal with artwork on most pages.
The artistic highlights in this issue of Broadcast, for me, are the “Degenerate Art” section of collages by editor Rose ov Sharon and the very touching and beautiful collages of Kali 106, who’s work is featured in posthumous tribute. The other artistic highlight is the stimulating drawings accompanying James Curcio’s “Hillbilly Tantra”, which were provided by Michelle Witchypoo. These along with the other images throughout the journal beautifully reflect the ideas expressed in the text.
Of the written contribution to Broadcast 10, my favourite pieces both came from the Center for Tactical Magic. Both pieces “Transformational Magic” and “Power Transposition Spell” discuss connection between magic and certain forms of activism, which is an area that I am particularly interested in at the moment.
Other contributions that I particularly enjoyed were “Babel” by Peter Grey, which argues for utilising “active choice” to help us to cope with the data-glut that is modern life, the brilliant “Final Secrets of the Orange Path”, secrets which I’ll leave you to discover, and “Why Harry Potter Eventually Loses to the Black Magician” by Devin Galaudet. While I wouldn’t exactly call myself a Crowleyite I have a strong dislike of the Harry Potter series and Devin Galaudet’s piece made me smile.
Throughout the rest of the journal there are a couple of interviews, a piece entitled “Why Sigils Work”, a fascinating piece on Maria Denaglowska, some other Crowley-related piece and much more. There is definitely something for most magicians to get some enjoyment from here.
I’m pleased that this journal has seen the light of day again and I hope this means there will be more issues in the future.
Easily 5 stars.
However the big surprise in this Broadcast #10 is, among other details, a big change in the format: the Broadcast does no longer look like a fanzine, it became a book!
This broadcast continues the tradition of the previous TOPY Broadcasts: avant-garde Occulture which does not need to be aligned to a defined current, a bit of Thelema (there's a great essay by Soror Lutea about the Egyptian Symbolism in Liber Resh), a visit to unknown paths of the old days (the article about Maria DeNaglowska by Tzeenj is simply amazing in this sense), interviews with authors who have been publishing recently (one of the best ways to remember that Occulture is not simply something that happened 80 years ago, but something that still exists and it's alive), etc.
The diversity of this Broadcast is what I loved the most about it. DIY Magick meets scholar Occultism; there's both a place for humor (Harry Potter vs. Aleister Crowley!) and serious studies (again, the article about Liber Resh is a must read for any Occultist)... and, of course, lots of the irreverent spirit of TOPY.
