Pacing and some technicalities aside, this is a compelling adventure. It is full of intriguing ideas that kept me reading on, as I always enjoy exploring someone else's world. It is clearly aimed at teenage readers and as such, has a nice mix of danger and imagination without being too deep and confusing its target audience. Good effort.

I heard of this book through an online forum and being an avid fantasy reader I decided to give it a go. I am so glad that I did as there is one word to describe this book. Brilliant. From the very first page you are transported into the changelings world and you actually care what happens to the characters. Even though the book is short I found that the main locations of the story were easy to visualise from James' descriptions and after having seen a few pics from the illustrated version, they are exactly as I imagined them. All in all a great story full of interesting characters and locations and if book 2 is as good as this, which it is looking likely to be, then we could have the next major fantasy series on our hands. Keep up the excellent work James.
Book 1 Dragons and Demon [ No Rating ] 24 Apr 2006
Excellent read, sucks the un-suspecting reader into a rich world of magic, drama, dragons and demons with little warning! As mentioned by other reviews below - perhaps a little short for my liking... but then it just makes you want book 2 all that sooner! Good Luck James.

the book surpassed all my expectations....very well written, full of Tolkein type characters and the action moves at a cracking pace of knots.....looking forward to book two...come on James, get writing....Graham, Hanworth
A man with a great future [ No Rating ] 9 Mar 2006
The difference between a good book and a great book is that once you start to read a good book you have to keep reading till the end. With a great book your mind only sees the first few words as by then although your eyes are following the words your mind can watch it like a film. With characters and situations clearly discribed and not over detailed it becomes easy to watch Jack as he first comes to terms with his ability to change into a dragon and to see the pain and hope on the faces of those he joins with in this gripping tale of good against evil.
The book is short and to the point , which although it leaves us desparate for more is a great deal better than having it bulked out with countless sub plots that have nothing to do with the main story.
A brilliant book and well worth reading.
James McVean should be among the top authers and with more books to his credit will soon find his place with them.

A time for a new adventure master, a time to see what he has to offer.....are you ready to live for that time?

A wonderful start to an adventure that leaves you tasting the flavours of excitement of a young lad and his heritage.

Let the adventure continue.
Changelings - Book 1 by James A McVean [ No Rating ] 28 Nov 2005
I really enjoyed the book but my one big complaint is that it wasn't long enough! I got into it straight away and couldn't wait to finish it - when I did finish I was dying to know what happened next - us women are never satisfied! My boyfriend will verify that I started reading it on Friday night and could not put it down and I more or less read it in one continuous go.

I really liked the main boy/dragon character. As I was reading it, I felt that the book was quite magical and it was very much a case of good versus evil which always makes for a good story.

I am definitely interested in your next instalment - please let me know when that book is published.

Well Done Jim, I do admire people who have the imagination and tenacity to write a novel as I have no imagination whatsover - I like to just deal with facts and figures but I do love a good book.

Refreshing Swords and Sorcery [ No Rating ] 13 Nov 2005
I thoroughly enjoyed Changelings. I was interested in the main characters and their fates from the word go, especially Jack and his transformation. The scenes and action are vivid, you feel like you're right there. It had lots of ideas for characters and things that I had never come across/thought of before, really interesting stuff. It also came to a good old fashioned climatic conclusion, which is really refreshing these days, to be turning the pages at the end of a book eagerly. I'll definitely buy the next one.
What makes a good book...? [ No Rating ] 2 Nov 2005 (updated 2 Nov 2005)
A good book, despite the genre, should be interesting, it should keep the reader turning page after page until the end, and after that a good book will have you craving for more.
Changelings Dragon’s and demons possessed all of those qualities, but one thing that separates James A. McVean from the good books is his ability to compose great books.
Cheers on a work of art!

From the first chapter onwards Changelings enthralled me. It has all the elements of a great fantasy adventure. It should appeal to teens of either sex and adults who have a penchant for fantasy and a love of dragons.
The characters are ingenious, all worthy of the ultimate battle they will fight.

Changelings is a wonderful story about dragons and demons and the fight between good and evil. The story starts with a young pickpocket called Jack and follows him on an exciting journey of self discovery. After picking the pocket of a wandering mage, Jack is shocked to find that he has a special talent. He is even more shocked to learn that his secret power is the key to saving the world from being destroyed by an evil demon hoard.
Changelings is an absolute must for anyone who has ever dreamed of dragons.
