Description:

"Whoever said space is infinite never wrote a newspaper column..."

Kathy Shaidle did. "Acoustic Ladyland" collects her favorite pieces from the pre-9/11 era, when she was budding conservative writing for a very liberal paper.

A pioneering blogger since 2000, Shaidle is the cranky "plugged in" voice behind RelapsedCatholic and, more recently, FiveFeetOfFury.

Mark Steyn says:

"By the way, Kathy Shaidle has a new e-book out. I'm so square I'm not sure I quite know what that is, but I've read it, and it reads like an old-fashioned non-e-book, only better.

"You should get it.

"She has fans around the world: in the course of the last year, I've sat in a restaurant on the beach at Malibu and at the Savoy Grill in London and listened to various long-distance admirers regale me with favourite examples of her prose..."

Loved the Can-Con, Catholic-Con of Acoustic Ladyland [ No Rating ] 8 Feb 2008
I hadn't read Ms. Shaidle's Toronto Star pieces, so all of these essays were new to me. Being an Catholic ex-schoolgirl myself, I particularly enjoyed Shaidle's rueful memories of her youth and her jokes at the expense of the dumb Catholic schoolgirls of, um, my generation. Reading Shaidle, I get the sense that inside she is still a nasty, sarcastic, eye-rolling Catholic schoolgirl with her kilt rolled up, and her blouse untucked, and cigarettes hidden in her pencil case. Of course, I also get the sense that she got the best marks in English and History classes and would have got the best mark in Religion class if Sister had any sense of humour whatsoever.
Liked it, but . . . [ No Rating ] 16 Jan 2008

I liked it, but wish it had been longer, and with some new material as well. But, overall, worth it. And let me add my own voice to the swelling chorus: Who the hell did OSV think they were hiring?
still needs more

I rush to say that I'm an enthusiastic admirer of the author's judgement and wit: I read her blog almost every day.

But, I found "Acoustic Ladyland" disappointing.

It seemed a meal made of left-overs.

I had hoped for precise, concise and comprehensive underpinnings for her many stunning one-liners, but found her wandering elsewhere too often.

A very good social/political book remains missing from her CV.

I'm certain she has it in her.

I hope she writes it soon.

Always on point

I'd been reading Kathy Shaidle's blog for a year or so now, and I was hungry for more. These pieces date from her tenure as a columnist for a Toronto newspaper, before her Web archives kick in, and reading them convinced me that what Florence King is to the South, Kathy Shaidle is to the Great White North. Miss this at your peril.
Wonderful!

Edgy, well-written, bite-sized pieces of Kate's wit. If it has a flaw it is that it is too short. N.B> I would have added colourful and humourous, but being from the US, I don't know how to spell big words like those.)
