They relocate from Wyoming to Deadwood where David and Matthew take over Ryker's Potato Creek Gold Mine, which he has deeded to them in his will. Ida Mae Stewart opens a home school for Deadwood's young. Ryker, who has heart failure, puts his life in order by clearing his name with the law. He has an assault charge against him for wounding the murderer of his wife and child, and being a wanted man bothers the daylights out of him. They have several adventures and meet many colorful characters, both historic and fictitious, during the story. Issues including capital pubishment, robberies, shootouts, prostitution, gambling, alcoholism, and the deadly effects of the plague are explored.
