This is a reprint of the 4 "Doctor Death" short stories that appeared in All Detective before they renamed it for a run of a different Doctor Death.
This Doctor Death was an international criminal mastermind, unlike the next one who was a warped scientist wanted to save the world by killing off most of the population.
Doctor Death actually appeared in the second story staring Nips Holliway, a trouble shooter for a jeweler, and was apparently killed off at the end. He was brought back in the 4th Nips story, again killed off, then appeared in the 5th and 6th story (again, being killed off, and coming back).
While interesting stories, Nips made a poor opponent for Dr. Death. The author had to come up with some justification for getting Nips involved in things. Obviously, Dr Death was intended to appear only once, but probably was brought back by editorial decree. And most likely, the series was ended to make way for a much more formidible Dr Death, and a more suitable hero to oppose him.
Altus Press plans on reprinting the 5 Dr Death novels that came later (3 published, 2 un-published). I look forward to those volumes.
