Description:

Never underestimate the effect you have on another simply by crossing their path. Emotions you feel but think inappropriate to voice. They are the emotions that play on the mind. Beneath the cold calm exterior of us all exists a frequent gale of emotions. These emotions determine our actions. ‘Selected Emotions for Her’ is a powerful collection of poems detailing the workings of the mind; the struggle of never having the opportunity to voice these emotions.

‘Trying so hard but always fail, The love for you… clouds of emotion, A frequent gale. Every time I think of you different emotions stir, That’s what it’s all about… Selected Emotions for Her.’(Selected Emotions for Her)

As I read Darren Jones poetry, I was immediately impressed by the author's candor and style. His ability to draw the reader into his thought processes and touch them at their deepest emotional level by the shared human experiences described herein is nothing short of masterful. I highly recommend this poetry book to everyone that has ever experienced the exhilaration or the anguish of love. "Selected Emotions for Her" will not disappoint.

There is a great deal of pain in these poems. The poet truly feels this... struggle to express himself. A beautiful piece of work defining a man with a great future!!!

I am already partial to romantic work and I find this polished, expressive, emotive, and well structured. I also enjoyed the fancifully mythological work you included in this collection. I wish you the best of success with the poetry publication. (I cannot find the rating button but your work deserves all of these stars.)

In "Selected Emotions", Darren Jones delicately shares the inner landscape of lost love from a young man's perspective. The modern, song-like rhythms and lyricism are easy to relate to, while lush linguistic images enhance a sense of surrealism.

When someone writes about their love, it is easy to bore a reader with all too honest sentimentality. "Selected Emotions" is that rarity: honesty through the lenses of an elegant soul. Even at the precarious moment of baring his soul, Mr. Jones' emotions tumble on the pages in a refined layout: the combination of natural etheriality and dark despair is haunting.

This anthology is pleasure for heart and head. It carries the reader effortlessly with its beauty and leaves you thoughtful beyond tantalizing glimpses at another's world within. I recommend it strongly to anyone breathing - you'll feel it.

The title poem reminded me of my past... back when I was in the Army. I joined so I could go to boot camp with this girl. My plan ended up backfiring, and I was sent clear across the country, to another training center. I remember lying in bed at night staring at her photograph, missing her. I even bought the shampoo that she used, because I missed the smell of her hair (even though I had no hair).

I can relate to this writer...
... like him, every day I wake, I make another mistake.

Emotional but Contemporary Impact [ No Rating ] 26 Mar 2006
Selected Emotions for Her has a contemporary beat, a sharp, almost choppy flow, like the rhythm found in today's music. The emotion and imagery pounds in the mind after the book is closed.

A few of Darren R. Jones' practices seem unnecessary, such as his underlining the title of poems and the lack of words in some sentences, but that adds to his "modern" experience and experiment.

Astonishing [ No Rating ] 26 Mar 2006
An astonishing read. Darren captures your heart wit his beautiful, moving, and emotionally deep words. I especialy love the poem "WhatHave I Done?" Futhermore, I love the way the title and author's name is watermarked into the background.

A light touch on difficult subject matter [ No Rating ] 22 Mar 2006
A deftly portrayed emotional narrative that explores the realms between melancholy and whimsy. The preview is well composed, forming a visual impression almost as strong as the words themselves, which bodes well for the complete version.

I am happy to report that I enjoyed these poems. Above all they seem to be about human relationships on a personal level. Good Luck with the book!

Darren R Jones has put together a collection of very personal verses in which he shares with us his feelings on relationships. Millions can and do wax lyrical on this very thing, and as we know, the ten per centers would not find their next meal if they did not. But how to do it well? Darren can, and does, here, right now. His style is as my title to this review suggests, evocative of Haiku, not totally, as it does not conform line by line, and some verses suddenly flow and blossom and turn literary tundra into a lush pasture. But that's really the heart and a gold-nibbed pen manifesting and embedding the age old agony 'to love and to lose' into our own souls, via the pages. Darren also occasionally branches out into other fields, and is his own observation of life, and nature, around him. Please do at least take a look at Darren's preview, and if introspective verse of this style is 'your bag', you will cherish his book which you may well find impossible not to buy. Well done, Darren.

Fear. Regret. Confusion. Felt by many, admitted by few. Feelings so often inflicted on one human being by another. Feelings so powerful they creep inside the body and feed off the mind. If allowed, they will consume and control us. Beneath the calm exterior of us all exists a violent and uncontrollable storm of emotions.

‘Selected Emotions for Her’ details the workings of the mind; the uncontrollable journey of emotions experienced after having lost ‘The One’. A journey beginning in confusion, and ending in self-discovery and a greater understanding of the mystery of LOVE.

This collection of memories, experiences and emotions are immersed in sentiments reflecting those of the romantic period. It is an unquestionable choice to lace these demanding thoughts in a demanding literary form. The poems create emotions not just for her, but conjure up identifiable emotions for him. The struggle to reflect meaning in form is felt, particularly in his free verse poems. Undoubtedly, a modern day sentiment embodied in an archaic form.

This book is as much about the layout of the poems as the words used. Each poem sits on the page with no page numbers, headers or footers to draw your attention away from the emotions. This book taken as a whole shows confusion, often upsetting, often funny. Beautifully written. Beautifully structured. Well done!

As a whole, Darren Jones’ work catches the emotions of an adolescent male, experiencing the hurt caused by the loss of a first love. I was particularly struck by two pieces, entitled, Nothing at All and What have I done? The first, articulates the endless feeling of emptiness and the extinction of emotion felt during a difficult period of a young person’s life. The second, expresses the overwhelming confusion, regret and endless unanswered questions, experienced during the breakup of a relationship. I would recommend this text, as it is difficult to complete without becoming engulfed in the pure expressed emotions obviously felt by the poet.
