Some background info for people who may not be aware.
Captain Hazzard was AA Wyn's attempt at doing a Doc Savage clone, written by Paul Chadwick under the "Chester Hawks" house name. Only one issue came out ("Python Men of the Lost City", which Ron also revamped and published under the Airship 27 line), BUT a second one was written! With the cancellation of Captain Hazzard, Chadwick (or his editors) used it as a Secret Agent X (Wyn's only successful hero pulp) story, now titled "Curse of the Crimson Horde" (SAX #39, Sept 38).
So Ron Fortier took that SAX story, and rewrote it back into a Captain Hazzard story. Most likely the original version as CH is long lost. But they probably didn't do to much to change it from CH to SAX.
This installment has Hazzard and crew up against a dasterdly villain trying to corner the lucrative fresh pearl market. With a premise such as this, you know you're in for some underwater excitement. Over the course of this rollicking tale, we see Hazzard go up against killer crocs, man-eating sharks, deadly cobras, lethal scorpions and a host of vile henchmen. There's deep sea diving, battles between planes and boats, battles in the air and more than a few damsels in distress, femme fatales and daring last minute escapes.
In a nutshell, CURSE OF THE RED MAGGOT is pure pulp gold! The pacing is break neck, the dialog amusing and tough. There's a reason the pulp fiction of the 30s is making a comeback. If you think the edge-of-your-seat excitement of Indiana Jones is something rare to that franchise, then you haven't read classic pulp fiction. And what better place to begin than RED MAGGOT.
This re-edited, updated edition now includes a host of new material ranging from a pin-up gallery of Hazzard and crew from veteran comic artist Rob Davis (who also does the interior illustrations) as well as an interview with Davis who shares his thoughts on his career and the challenge of bringing pulp fiction back to life for a new generation to enjoy.
Whether you're new to pulp fiction or a long-time fan looking to quench that never-ending thirst for excitement, CURSE OF THE RED MAGGOT is for you.
