He was the uncle of the prophet Joseph Smith. Being called to lead the saints at Adam-Ondi-Ahman, John witnessed as mobs and government officials destroyed the saints' homes, stole their property, and issued an act of total extermination. Following the blissful years in Nauvoo, John traveled to the Salt Lake Valley as the saints were again drivin from their homes.
