The Nigerian Organ Symphony was composed between November 30 and December 3, 2007, at Talladega, Alabama State. The music is influenced by the compositional techniques of nineteenth century French organ symphonies, in particular, Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor’s works. Even though the character, style, and registrations of the five movements of this work is influenced by French music, the Nigerian Organ Symphony is infused with distinct African music creative and performance procedures such as scales, ostinati, call-and-response, interlocking rhythms, dance nuances, folk melodies, bell patterns, drum patterns, foot stamping and hand clapping rhythms. The five pieces are suitable for various occasions within the church calendar, such as preludes and postludes, processions, weddings, concerts, communion, as well as other contemplative aspects of services in the church.
