Description:

This workbook provides plenty of ideas for writing practice, starting with sentences, progressing to paragraphs, and finally offering a variety of composition topics. The sentence and paragraph exercises are organised into themes, such as animals, transport and sports, while the composition exercises give practice in narrative, descriptive, informative and persuasive essays. Plenty of space is provided for each exercise, so that students can keep a record, in one handy book, of all the writing performed over a period of time. The book can be shared by several family members, (making a wonderful family memento), with the younger children working on their sentences and paragraphs, while the older ones practise their compositions. Alternatively, the workbook can be used by ESL students of all ages and stages who wish to improve their written English through regular writing practice.

I have three children, and I also teach ESL students. I bought this book because it has a variety of interesting writing topics, and gives plenty of practice to students of all ages and abilities. My little Grade 1 daughter uses the first section of the book, writing a page of sentences each day after school. My young son, in Grade 4, uses the workbook after his little sister has finished her sentences, and does a page or two of paragraph writing. He enjoys the different categories of subjects that each page offers. Finally, my Grade 8 teenager sits down, twice a week, and chooses an essay topic to do. I like the idea that the whole family can use the same book, and I plan to keep the book as a family memento, when the children have finished it, as a record of my children's writing when they were young. Being an ESL teacher, I also have an extra copy of the book to use with my students at school. I have noticed an improvement in my children's and my students' writing ability since they started using this workbook, through regular practice and the building of writing confidence. I recommend this workbook to families and ESL students alike.
