Description:

Sandy Mackelson is ill-prepared for the plethora of challenges in the Warm Heart of Africa. He is soon exposed to the regime’s blatant deceit and corruption. While Mackelson is preoccupied with the minutia of arrangements for the Queen’s Birthday party and dealing with the embarrassment of an English national accused of abusing his pupil, President Chilembe is focused on bigger issues. He is determined to secure a third term of office by fair means or foul. While his country faces serious food shortage, murderous tribal conflict and a devastating outbreak of meningitis in the north, the President and his cohorts conspire to fleece the nation. Initial international reaction to these crises is muted and fails to stop the rot – until Beauty Musajakawa, a gritty young aid official, and Sam Phiri, rising star of the President’s otherwise hopeless administration, combine to orchestrate events for the greater good.

I ordered this book recently and was pleasantly surprised at the speedy delivery. I have read several books on African politics and it was refreshing to find one which combines the intrigue behind the scenes with the enjoyment and pace of a novel. The style of writing is exceptionally good for a new writer; the characters are rounded and identifiable, while the presentation of the plot keeps the reader interested and eager to read on. I could easily have read this book at one sitting.

A real page-turner with all the ingredients guaranteed to keep the reader wanting more - corruption, duplicity, infidelity, poverty and love.

The characters are well-rounded and believable and the setting in the fictional country of Zungula is an accurate reflection of life in many African countries today.

An excellent debut novel.

Written by an author who clearly understands and loves Africa, and has a unique insight into the world of international aid and diplomacy. The characters and plot are so realistic as to be true. Perhaps they are.
