IN THE EARLY 1970S a young, inexperienced minister named Ben McLean arrives in Heavener, Oklahoma, a small town in the Kiamichi Mountains of southeast Oklahoma. While going through his own personal fears and self doubts, he hears and interacts with his parishioners and their stories of pain and joy.
