The very name of Col. John Mosby struck fear in the hearts of the Union Army and its supporters. He disrupted supply lines, intercepted, scouted, raided and gathered intelligence. He was full of bravado, strong skills of command, and he was able to disperse his command in such a way that he earned the title, "The Grey Ghost." In the partisan ranger corps of the CSA, border ruffians and bushwhackers (so-called) were often the norm, but Mosby's command stood out in its precise military discipline and Southron honor. He even tells us of his having the distinction of having "a negro baby and a dog" named after him.
