Review in The English Churchman, Issue No. 7704 December 2006 [ No Rating ] 19 Jan 2007 (updated 19 Jan 2007)
Grace - the underserved favour of God towards man but, very sadly, oft neglected at various times in the history of the Christian Church. This doctrine may have been neglected but God has never been without His faithful servants. In this 384 page volume we are reminded of the contribution made by such men as William Tiptaft, Tobias Crisp, William Huntington, William Gadsby, J.C. Philpot, John Kershaw, Robert Murray M'Cheyne, James Bourne, Eli Ashdown, Francis Covell, John Vinall and John Warburton - all men who steadfastly preached the doctrine of Grace. Various sermons and works by these stalwarts of former years are included, preceded by a helpful introduction by the editor. Numerous supportive Scriptural references are included throughout. Although these brethren ministered many years ago their basic message remains vitally important for the present age. Whilst much of the material has been published in earlier years it is most helpful to have it presented in one volume. Each of the men featured has an interesting brief biographical note preceding their exhortation. There is also a most helpful appendix listing further works by those featured in the book. It is refreshing to be reminded of what has been preached and written about the bountiful grace of our merciful God in earlier years, and to be given an opportunity of reading material highlighting this oft neglected doctrine. In part two of the book contributions from those ministering in our own day are included: B.A. Ramsbottom, Don Fortner, Henry Mahan, Don Bell, Gary Shepard, Todd Nibert, P.L. Meney, T.Harding - some of whom minister in the UK. Helpful biographical notes accompany the person's contribution. In a day when so many seem to ignore or slight the doctrine of Grace it is good to have this book centring on this subject. Morgan Crane English Churchman Issue No. 7704 December 2006
Review in New Focus Magazine, October/November 2006 [ No Rating ] 18 Oct 2006 (updated 18 Oct 2006)
Sovereign Grace - Past and Present demonstrates how God's electing purpose in Christ has been understood, valued and professed by Christian believers for generations.

Ian Potts has gathered sermons and articles from old writers such as Tobias Crisp and William Gadsby and modern gospel preachers such as Don Fortner and Henry Mahan, to bring us a chain of witness linked together over the years by the unchanging gospel of free and sovereign grace in Christ. Free grace is not a novelty, as this book clearly shows, and God has promised never to leave Himself without a witness.

We are delighted that Mr Potts is producing such material, making old writers available to a new audience and, by his knowledge of current trends in modern evangelicalism, introducing modern writers whose eligibility for inclusion is that they maintain and profess the same old gospel truths that marked out their predecessors.

Review in Gospel Standard Magazine, September 2006 [ No Rating ] 12 Sep 2006 (updated 12 Sep 2006)
This is a most interesting collection of sermons and writings, and, as the title indicates, "from past and present."

We do not know of any similar publication that consists of sermons preached by so many different eminent, godly preachers from a former generation. These are Tiptaft, Crisp, Huntington, Gadsby, Philpot, Kershaw, M'Cheyne, Bourne, Ashdown, Covell, Vinall and Warburton (in that order). What a collection of burning and shining lights! Surely "a feast of fat things"!

The second half of the book consists of present day free grace preachers. Not all the chapters are sermons; some are shorter articles. Most of the preachers are from the U.S.A. and unknown to us. They appear to be very strong and sound on the glorious doctrines of the gospel, but not with the same emphasis on gracious experience as the ministers from the past.

The book is beautifully produced and sold at a most reasonable price. Our readers will remember that recently we reviewed Grace and Truth Online's first publication: Christ the Sun of Righteousness and Huntington's Fountain of Life.
