It has gradually become clearer and clearer to him. But at the same time, he has been mindful of the danger of making it too clear, reinterpreting it and whittling it down to size just so it won't seem so impenetrable and frustrating. In his commentary on the fifth gospel, Price preserves the balance: he shows how the text need not strike us as strange at all and yet how alien its assumptions are to our way of thinking. While this book takes note of the opinions of various specialists on the Gospel of Thomas, it does not, like some of their books, choke on its own methodology. The result is a plain-spoken interpretation of this intriguing text against the ancient background of its writer, as far as we can reconstruct it. And of course, no matter how many books on the Gospel of Thomas one has read, one will assuredly find new insights here. Keywords:Listed in: |
