I wrote this to teach my children about death in a way that they could manage. I have taken the Catholic view of what happens (purely because it felt right for a kindly priest to explain it), but have made it clear that there are other beliefs. It would be a good opening for parents to talk to their children about a recent berevement. This story is 3 pages long, and although it was intended for young children, some adults like it even.
