Pope Benedict XVI began his first official visit as head of the Roman Catholic Church on April 15, 2008, arriving at Andrews Air Force Base aboard ‘Shepherd One.’ Benedict was met with great fan fare by President Bush, First Lady Laura Bush and their daughter Jenna at the start of what has become a historic trip aimed at making amends for the recent ‘abuse scandal’ and pushing for greater interreligious tolerance and dialogue.
