Description:

Is life determined by fate or by coincidence? Matthew soon finds out as he embarks on a new journey by moving to the big city of Memphis and leaving his small town home. Choosing to hide his past, he soon forms bonds with an overly dramatic Mississippi boy named Jacob and a passionate art dealer named Zoë. While discovering himself in a local club called Red Square, but avoiding the dance floor, Matthew soon forms a secret friendship with an elusive drug dealer name Vance. Vance forces Matthew to face his past, and Matthew soon finds himself missing his mute brother, Ethan, who has been stuck in a boarding school in St. Louis. However, it is Seth, a photography student, who forces Matthew to question his own choices and face the truth. The Other Side of What will have you questioning your own past as well; each page will make you stop and face your true self!

Inspiring read... [ No Rating ] 24 Oct 2008 (updated 24 Oct 2008)
I would recommend The Other Side of What to anyone who has made the journey of self-discovery from stunted beginnings, searching for the new whilst coming to terms with the old. Matthew, the story's narrator, is coming to terms with a past he is reluctant to share with his new friends. And on the way, with the help of these friends and his brother, Ethan, Matthew eventually gains closure and a peace of mind that comes with being open and unashamed. Shannon Yarbrough paints a bold and detailed picture of life in Midtown, Memphis, with the bars and clubs, rocky relationships and intimate moments. Well recommended.
