Description:

"The Brink" is set in 1940 when Britain is at war. John Riggs is a working class, self-educated police detective trying to establish himself in a class-ridden world. He's prepared to lie and to use people in order to get ahead, but his increasingly problematic personal life - the demands of his former girlfriend, his affair with the wife of his boss, an ambiguous relationship with a young WPC, suspicions about a foreign doctor at his lodging house...all these complicate his professional activities. When he finds a body in a bomb-blasted house, and the victim is burned beyond recognition, and there is a strong smell of petrol...he becomes suspicious. And then he spots his own St. Christopher medal lying there by the victim's hand....the last time he'd seen that medal was at Alice's place... The implications hit him; he realises this case calls for some serious investigation, some real detective work - for a change.

The Brink, Jack Messenger [ No Rating ] 23 Jul 2008

A compelling, layered story told through spare dialogue and precise, economic description, this is a tale of a flawed hero's efforts to separate himself from his past and define his relationships, particularly with women, while navigating his way through criminal wartime London. The characters are lightly but deftly drawn, with the teasing out of their motivations - by themselves and by the reader -providing as much intrigue as the crimes which form the underlying plot. A gripping read - one to enjoy and to recommend highly to others.

This is a fascinating book that starts off well and gets better and better. The writing is witty and precise, dipping in and out of the first person with enormous skill. The story is extremely well plotted, there are dozens of interesting, vital characters and the main personality is an engrossing mix of faults and virtues, strengths and weaknesses. While there's plenty of tension and mystery, the book is full of genuine humour and a great atmosphere - it really feels like you're there in Britain during the Blitz. A terrific read!
